This study investigates how scarcity message type (sales volume vs. remaining quantity) and numeric presentation format (frequency vs. percentage) influence online consumers’ purchase intention through psychological mechanisms. A 2×2 between-subjects experiment with 133 participants was conducted using mobile shopping stimuli, and data were analyzed via PROCESS Macro (Model 4). The results show that remaining quantity information significantly increases psychological pressure, which strongly enhances purchase intention, whereas the social proof pathway for sales volume information was not supported. Furthermore, frequency (N-count) formats increase message credibility, while percentage formats heighten perceived sales magnitude; both pathways positively affect purchase intention. These findings highlight psychological pressure as a central mechanism in scarcity messages and demonstrate that credibility-driven and magnitude-driven processes operate depending on numeric framing. Practical implications include using N-count formats to build trust, percentage formats to signal popularity, and remaining-quantity cues to induce urgency.
