The climate crisis and carbon neutrality have emerged as critical challenges
facing humanity today, leading to rapidly growing global demands for waste
reduction. These changes call for proactive transformation within Korea’s
exhibition sector as well. Exhibitions inherently consume substantial resources and
energy during installation and dismantling processes, resulting in large volumes of
waste after their conclusion. However, many domestic exhibition institutions still
lack sufficient institutional foundations and practical measures for environmentally
responsible operation. Accordingly, this study aims to systematize strategies for
reducing exhibition waste by examining and analyzing successful domestic and
international practices from an ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance)
perspective and by conducting expert interviews, ultimately proposing practical and
sustainable approaches to waste reduction in exhibitions. In this study, an ESG
perspective refers to an integrated approach that considers: environmental (E)
practices that minimize resource use and waste generation; social (S) dimensions
that emphasize stakeholder participation and responsible collaboration; and
governance (G) aspects that address decision-making structures and management
and evaluation systems throughout exhibition operations.
This research reviews the concept of ESG and its applicability to exhibition institutions through literature review and theoretical analysis, and examines
environmental impacts occurring across the entire exhibition operation process. To
enhance practical relevance, in-depth interviews were conducted with 21 exhibition
practitioners and experts, and major domestic and international ESG-oriented
exhibition cases were comparatively analyzed according to environmental (E), social
(S), and governance (G) elements. Based on this analysis, the study derives
practical strategies for waste reduction by identifying the organic interconnections
among ESG components. Case selection prioritized exhibitions directly aligned with
the research focus on waste reduction, including practices such as reuse and
modularization of structures, reduction of printed materials through digital
transformation, recovery, donation, and recycling of materials, and operation of
waste separation systems. In addition, cases that implemented social value
programs or demonstrated governance mechanisms—such as internal committees,
operational guidelines, disclosure of quantitative indicators, or international
certifications—were preferentially selected. The analysis therefore focused on
exhibition operations in which at least two ESG elements, including the
environmental dimension, were integratively implemented.
The findings indicate that effective reduction of exhibition waste requires:
first, the expanded design and utilization of reusable and circular modular
structures; second, the standardization of environmentally friendly materials and
improved on-site accessibility; third, enhanced transparency across the entire
supply chain from planning and operation to dismantling; fourth, strengthened
education and information-sharing systems to raise ESG awareness among
operating entities; and fifth, the establishment of institutional support and
long-term policy frameworks to secure implementation foundations. In particular,
the importance of collaborative structures that support improved practitioner
awareness and execution capacity, as well as policy incentives, is emphasized.
By proposing an integrated ESG strategy for reducing exhibition waste, this
study provides foundational reference material for guiding the exhibition sector
toward environmentally responsible and accountable transformation. Drawing on domestic and international case analyses and practitioner interviews, it structurally
reinterprets how environmental (E), social (S), and governance (G) elements can be
embedded throughout the planning–operation–dismantling cycle of exhibitions, and
suggests concrete, actionable directions applicable to real-world operations for
exhibition institutions, policymakers, and exhibition planners. Furthermore, by
considering practical constraints frequently identified in the field—such as
institutional limitations, budget and workforce constraints, and limited accessibility
of eco-friendly materials—the study offers practice-oriented policy
recommendations and implementation strategies, thereby contributing to the
development of an exhibition ecosystem capable of reducing waste.
Ultimately, this research is significant in that it integrates waste reduction
practices in the exhibition sector within the analytical framework of ESG, linking
organizational operational direction with qualitative improvements in exhibition
waste reduction and presenting sustainability of the exhibition ecosystem as an
expanded agenda. It is expected to contribute to the foundation for future
development of ESG indicators, institutional design, and policy research in the
exhibition field.
