This study seeks to address the limitations arising from the ephemerality and non-verbal nature of dance, which often prevent the inner experiences and artistic reasoning of choreographers from being fully recorded and preserved. Based on the recognition that simple video documentation or existing dance documentaries are insufficient for conveying the intrinsic value embedded in the creative process, the purpose of this research is to explore the potential of a new archiving model that integrates autoethnography and dance documentary in order to record and communicate the choreographic process and the identity of the creator.
The researcher conducted an in-depth recording and analysis of three original works through an autoethnographic approach, and, based on these findings, carried out a practice-based study by producing a dance documentary that visualizes the process. Prior to the main discussion, a structural correspondence framework was established by drawing on the autobiographical writing structure of autoethnography and Paul Ricœur’s theory of narrative identity, outlining how the creator’s experience is constructed through the processes of recording (language)–interpretation (narrative)–visualization (image).
Through this structural approach, the study found that the choreographer’s identity emerges as a processual identity, one that is continually constructed and transformed as the language of documentation, bodily movement, and the camera’s gaze operate reflectively and reciprocally. In particular, by applying Ricœur’s triple mimesis, the study examined the choreographer’s identity formation in depth and revealed that the process unfolds along three narrative axes: lack–rupture–expansion. In the stage of lack, inner longing appeared as bodily ritual and as anxiety inherent in the creative site. In the stage of rupture, social tensions and others’ expectations were converted into humor and satirical irony, revealing a relational self. In the final stage of expansion, emotional and physical boundaries opened, enabling the choreographer to release previous experiences and move toward redefining the self as an open and evolving being.
In conclusion, by structuring and visualizing the choreographer’s experience across the layers of text, body, and image as a single narrative system, this study offers several contributions. First, it expands the scope of dance scholarship by positioning the creator’s inner experience and narrative as central objects of inquiry. Second, it proposes methodological possibilities for expanding dance archiving by combining autoethnography and dance documentary in a complementary manner. Third, by presenting the completed dance documentary as both an independent artistic work and an academic achievement, the study offers a new perspective and a practical model for viewing the entire creative process as a unified narrative and practice-based investigation. Further comparative applications across diverse cases and in-depth research on cinematic grammar may extend the implications of this study.
