Korean frequently generates homonyms that share identical
letterforms and pronunciations while conveying different meanings.
In situations where contextual information is insufficient, this
often increases the cognitive load involved in meaning selection.
Previous discussions on Korean homonyms have primarily explained
disambiguation processes through linguistic and syntactic context;
however, relatively little attention has been paid to how semantic
differences might be visually addressed through letterforms or
typographic design.
Against this backdrop, this study reconceptualizes semantic
differences in Korean homonyms through the notion of semantic
feeling—a perceptual layer formed at the stage of sensory
processing—and explores the possibility of translating this layer into
visual cues within Hangul type design.
Methodologically, the semantic processing pathway is reorganized
into a three-stage visualization framework: Structure, Form, and
Texture. In the Structure stage, the level of arousal elicited by
semantic stimuli is translated into degrees of structural tension
within letterforms. In the Form stage, the emotional directionality of
meaning is organized into modules of formal nuance. In the Texture
stage, sensory residues remaining after emotional responses are
materialized through micro-visual elements such as line density,
direction, and repetition. Generative AI is additionally employed as
an auxiliary analytical tool to reference and organize recurring visual
patterns associated with different sensory categories.
Applying this framework to representative Korean homonyms
demonstrates that even words sharing identical forms can generate
distinct structural, formal, and sensory configurations according
to their meanings. This suggests that Hangul typefaces, while not
directly representing meaning, can function as perceptual cues that
assist semantic selection.
By extending the issue of homonymy into the domain of visual
design, this study proposes the potential for typography to intervene
in cognitive processes beyond mere information transmission.
