This study analyzes the movement structure of Im I-jo’s Gyobang Salpuri through the philosophical framework of Yin–Yang and the Five Elements in order to clarify the aesthetic principles and compositional meanings embodied in the work. Im I-jo’s Gyobang Salpuri is regarded as a representative example of traditional dance that harmonizes the emotional narrative of Salpuri with the distinctive elegance, playfulness, and expressive flair of Gyobang dance. The restrained breathing, short scarf technique, and sensuous bodily gestures form a unique aesthetic that distinguishes this choreography from conventional Salpuri pieces. These movement qualities provide meaningful clues for understanding the structural principles inherent in the dance, and this research interprets them through the lens of a classical East Asian philosophical system.
For the analysis, a performance video personally demonstrated by Im I-jo in 2011 was transcribed into textual form. Thirty-six passages were selected from the sequential rhythmic structure of Gutgeori–Eotmori–Gutgeori, focusing on moments where the characteristics of Yin–Yang and the Five Elements were clearly manifested. The analytical criteria were based on three major components of the system: the alternation of Yin and Yang, the attributes of the Five Elements, and the cyclical relationship of mutual generation, mutual overcoming, and harmonizing (Jehwa). Through these criteria, the study examined how the flow of movements develops and how the choreographic structure is formed.
The analysis reveals that the movements of Im I-jo’s Gyobang Salpuri generate different energies depending on rhythm and scene, demonstrating an organically interacting structure of Yin–Yang, the Five Elements, and the principles of mutual generation, mutual overcoming, and harmonizing. The dance alternates between inward motions—such as pulling the scarf close to the body and lowering the breath—and outward expansions, such as lifting the torso and extending the arms and scarf. Specific movement patterns, including the rise and fall of the body, gaze transitions, and the rotation and collection of the scarf, interact with rhythmic flow to produce a distinctive sense of dynamic stillness. The expansive qualities of Wood and Fire, the stabilizing force of Earth, the refined restraint of Metal, and the fluid connectivity of Water collaboratively shape each scene’s emotional tone and kinetic continuity. Natural transitions between movements embody mutual generation, while contrasts in breath, expansion, and contraction reflect mutual overcoming, structuring tension and modulation. Excessive elevation or energetic escalation is moderated through harmonizing, which restores balance and sustains the refined elegance and expressive dignity characteristic of Gyobang aesthetics. These findings indicate that the dance is not governed by a single dominant principle but rather by shifting energies and attributes that interact across scenes to regulate the overall choreographic flow.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that interpreting Im I-jo’s Gyobang Salpuri within the systematic framework of Yin–Yang and the Five Elements illuminates the aesthetic logic of its movement structure and offers new analytical perspectives for traditional dance research. By exploring the philosophical foundations embedded in traditional bodily movement, this study contributes to expanding the aesthetic depth and interpretive potential of Korean traditional dance.
