This study investigates the visualization of non-visible human spirituality through glass casting as a sculptural medium, focusing on the symbolic form of the “door.” Rather than presupposing religious doctrine or transcendent belief, the research examines contemporary, non-religious spirituality—understood as an experiential process of self-reflection and perceptual transformation—and explores how such experiences can be articulated through sculptural language.
Methodologically, the study begins with a theoretical examination of post-abstract art practices that have moved beyond representational narratives to construct spiritual experience through form, color, light, and space. Gaston Bachelard’s phenomenology of space provides an interpretive framework for understanding the door as a symbol of threshold and transition, while Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology and alchemical transformation offer a structural model for interpreting inner change as a staged psychological process. In addition, the study analyzes works by key artists who have employed light, color, and spatial conditions to generate non-material experiences, thereby situating the research within its broader art-historical context.
Based on this theoretical framework, four glass sculptures—Grey Door, Blue Edge, Fissure, and Door within Door within Door—were produced and analyzed using kiln-casting techniques. Through variations in glass thickness, degrees of transparency, color density, surface treatment, and spatial arrangement, each work conditions the transmission and accumulation of light, visual depth, and the viewer’s movement within space. These sculptural configurations guide the viewer’s experience of pause, contemplation, and passage. In particular, these formal conditions correspond to Jung’s alchemical color stages—Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, and Rubedo—forming a structure through which psychological transformation may be read as a symbolic narrative.
The findings demonstrate that cast-glass sculpture can function beyond the category of decorative object, operating instead as a spatial field that transforms perception and cognition through light and materiality. This study proposes that glass sculpture may be expanded as a sculptural language capable of mediating experiences of the secular sublime in contemporary art. Furthermore, it establishes a foundation for future research exploring the integration of spirituality with bodily experience through large-scale spatial installations and architectural contexts.
