This research explores the sculptural possibilities of "connection" and "expandability" by assembling discrete small units into diverse structural forms, leveraging the physical properties of glass. By utilizing various techniques—fusing, slumping, and blowing—the study examines the structural and formal characteristics that emerge during the layering and bonding of glass elements. The objective is to experimentally reinterpret expansion principles found in both natural and artificial structures through glass as a medium. This thesis attempts a formal interpretation of expandable structures based on the researcher’s sustained practice of repetitive and accumulative making, theoretically investigating the principles of structural expansion by analyzing the generation and bonding processes inherent in glass.
Drawing conceptual inspiration from structural patterns in brick architecture and nature, this study examines shared formal logic in how small units constitute larger wholes. Stacking and expansion strategies in biological dwellings are perceived as visual manifestations of accumulated labor and time, serving as a profound source of inspiration. By analyzing the self-organizing principles of natural assemblages alongside the systematic stacking methods of artificial constructions, the research explores sculptural possibilities through structural experiments that integrate both.
Natural structures—such as seashells, sea urchins, bird nests, and beaver dams—are built through radial expansion, whereas artificial structures like brick architecture expand through planned verticality. In both contexts, structures are commonly formed from readily available local materials. Attending to how each entity forms structures using familiar materials, this study adopts glass as its primary medium. Glass allows for a wide range of textural expression through cutting and forming and supports bonding and accumulation between units through fusing and casting.
To investigate the feasibility of structural bonding, three sequential experiments were conducted. The first examined vertical and radial expansion by forming wall-like assemblies using cut sheet glass and glass powder. By bonding brick-like and rod-like units with powder and frit under controlled heat and pressure, the study observed inter-unit connection strategies and form generation. The second experiment investigated horizontal and stratified structures by applying slumping to combine planar frameworks with sheet glass. By bonding sheet glass to the vertical-based structures from the first experiment via heat and gravity, forms exhibiting a dialogue between linear configurations and softened curves were produced. The third experiment explored condensation and expansion by applying blowing to a three-dimensional brick-like framework. Molten glass was blown into the voids of a volumetric structure to induce bonding, examining conditions where rigid vertical frameworks and fluid, expanding curved surfaces coexist.
Each experiment focused on realizing sculptural moments where artificial and natural expandability intersect by controlling glass properties—such as viscosity, flow behavior, and surface tension—alongside energy conditions like temperature, pressure, and gravity. Results indicated that required melting conditions and bonding methods vary according to the state of the glass (powder, frit, or molten), allowing for a comparative evaluation of technical compatibility and structural stability. Notably, when using powder as a bonding medium, a binder proved essential due to the material’s limited plasticity. Experiments with various binder combinations revealed that a mixture of xanthan gum and vegetable glycerin produced a darkened surface texture through carbonization. Although this differed from the initially intended bright coloration, it yielded a unique, heterogeneous texture and enhanced the visual clarity of bonded cross-sections. Consequently, this combination was selected as a repeatable material strategy to establish sculptural coherence across works.
While this study has addressed how stacking and expansion function as fundamental principles and mechanisms of structural generation in glass sculpture—rather than mere formal effects—future research and production will aim to evolve beyond single objects into an expandable sculptural system through modularization and rule-based arrangements. Furthermore, the study seeks to explore applicability to architectural contexts by referencing engineering and mathematical frameworks. By adopting rule-based methods such as fractal and parametric approaches, the research will continue to investigate configurations where computationally ordered arrays coexist with organic, irregular radial expansions. In parallel, the experimental application of new materials will be pursued to identify unexplored textures and material strategies, thereby broadening the expressive scope of glass sculpture.
