This study aims to reconceptualize the visual design of digital textbooks from the perspective of Universal Design (UD) and to propose visual design guidelines that reflect the needs of learners with diverse disabilities. To this end, the study first clarifies the concept and role of digital textbooks and examines accessibility and usability requirements derived from relevant standards, including digital textbook development guidelines, WCAG, ISO 9241-171, and the Korean Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2. In parallel, the concepts and characteristics of Universal Design, along with the design philosophies of Modernism, Functionalism, and the Bauhaus, are reviewed to construct an analytical framework linking these theories to digital textbook visual design.
The empirical analysis focuses on science, social studies, and English digital textbooks for grades 5 to 7 (elementary school 5th grade to middle school 1st grade), examining screen structure, navigation, color and typography, icon systems, and multimedia composition. Based on this analysis, the study adopts the seven principles of Universal Design—equitable use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and size and space for approach and use—as a top-level framework and maps the needs of learners with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities onto each principle. As a result, visual design guidelines for digital textbooks are derived, centered on typography, color, information structure, interaction, and multimedia representation.
This study is significant in that it extends the discussion of digital textbook accessibility beyond a primarily functional and technical focus to design-stage considerations of visual expression and interaction structure. Rather than dichotomizing general textbooks and those designed specifically for students with disabilities, the study proposes an integrated visual design approach in which diverse learners are accommodated within a single design framework through the application of Universal Design principles and disability-specific considerations.
The proposed visual design guidelines provide a shared reference for digital textbook developers, designers, and related stakeholders and can contribute to embedding learner diversity into the design and improvement of digital textbooks.
