As Contemporary dance creation is undergoing a paradigmatic shift from narrative-centered expression toward structure- and form-oriented approaches. As a result, mechanisms of meaning generation in dance are increasingly detached from linear plot and representational logic, becoming grounded instead in relationships among movement, space, and structural organization. Within this context, a central challenge for both dance theory and creative practice lies in sustaining structural coherence and semantic generativity while minimizing narrative determinacy. Addressing this issue, the present study adopts the semiotic theory of Umberto Ecoas its theoretical framework, focusing on the core concepts of opennessand polysemyto investigate how meaning is continuously generated under structural constraints in contemporary dance. The dance work ‘Shell’ serves as the primary case study, through which a practice-oriented semiotic analytical methodology for dance is constructed.
This study systematically examines Umberto Eco’s semiotic discussions of meaning production, structural limitation, and textual interpretation, arguing that signs are not closed units bearing fixed meanings but operative systems that are continually activated and reconfigured through interpretive processes within specific structural and cultural contexts. Within this framework, opennessis defined as a structural principle that preserves overall formal recognizability while allowing multiple interpretive pathways, whereas polysemyrefers to the
capacity of a single sign to generate diverse meanings depending on its structural position and contextual relations. From this perspective, dance is understood as an open semiotic system composed of bodily movement, spatial configuration, and material elements, in which meaning emerges through the relational organization and functional transformation of signs within the overall structure.
Methodologically, this study integrates literature analysis, theoretical applicability research, and practice-based analysis. On one hand, it reviews prior research on dance studies, non-narrative structural theories, and Umberto Eco’s semiotics; on the other, it analyzes the author’s own choreographic work ‘Shell’ from the creator’s perspective. The analysis focuses on how openness and polysemy are operationalized in the choreographic process, with particular attention to the organization of movement, spatial structuring, the use of props,
and the configuration of light as components of a dynamic semiotic network.
The findings demonstrate that ‘Shell’ does not merely reference openness and polysemy at a conceptual level but responds structurally to Umberto Eco’s theory of meaning generation. Through non-linear temporal organization, the juxtaposition of multiple scenes, and the recurrent entry of semiotic elements, the work maintains structural coherence while offering multiple interpretive pathways, enabling meaning to be continually activated, adjusted, and reconfigured during the viewing process. Openness is primarily manifested at the
structural level as accessibility, insofar as the work avoids a single narrative center or predetermined semantic endpoint, instead establishing a stable framework that accommodates multiple interpretations. Polysemy emerges through functional shifts of signs across different structural positions, whereby the same movement, prop, or lighting element assumes divergent semantic roles depending on its contextual configuration, thereby preventing the fixation of meaning.
Overall, openness and polysemy in ‘Shell’ function not as isolated aesthetic attributes but as interdependent mechanisms operating within a unified structural system. Openness provides the structural conditions for multiple interpretive trajectories, while polysemy enables the continuous differentiation and regeneration of meaning within those conditions. In doing so, the work sustains formal stability while resisting unidirectional semantic closure. This study demonstrates that Umberto Eco’s semiotic theory offers an effective analytical
framework for non-narrative dance works and provides explanatory and practical value for understanding how meaning is generated and transformed under structural constraints in contemporary dance. Through the analysis of concrete creative practice, the study establishes a foundation for further interdisciplinary research connecting semiotic theory and dance creation.
