에릭 이와젠, 알렉 와일더, 스탠리 프리드먼 작품을 중심으로 한 20세기 트롬본 소나타 양식 연구 = An Analysis of the Stylistic Features in 20th-Century Trombone Sonatas: Focusing on the Works of Eric Ewazen, Alec Wilder, and Stanley Friedman

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 20세기 음악의 다원적 양상을 대표하는 세 작곡가, 에릭 이와젠(Eric Ewazen), 알렉 와일더(Alec Wilder), 그리고 스탠리 프리드먼(Stanley Friedman)의 트롬본 소나타를 선정하여 그들의 양식적 특징을 대비적으로 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 각 작품이 구현하는 신낭만주의 양식(Ewazen), 클래식과 재즈가 결합된 양식(Wilder), 현대 어법 기반 양식(Friedman)을 중심으로, 화성, 리듬, 형식, 멜로디 등의 음악적 요소를 심도 있게 고찰하였다. 특히, 피아노 반주 전공자의 시각에서 피아노 반주부의 역할과 트롬본과의 앙상블 상호작용에 초점을 맞추어 양식에 따른 음악적 표현의 차이를 규명하였다. Alec Wilder의 작품에서 나타나는 재즈 화성(예:IV minor기능, Alt Sus코드 및 블루 노트의 사용) 원리를 분석하고, 에릭 이와젠의 풍부한 낭만주의적 화성 및 스탠리 프리드먼의 불협화적인 현대 어법과 비교하여, 세 작곡가가 소나타라는 형식을 통해 20세기 음악의 스펙트럼을 어떻게 확장했는지 논하였다. 연구 결과는 세 작품의 양식적 대비를 명확히 보여주며, 이는 연주자들에게 각 작품을 해석하는 데 필요한 구체적인 실연적 기준을 제공한다. 본 연구는 20세기 트롬본-피아노 듀오 레퍼토리에 대한 양식적 이해도를 증진시키고, 향후 동일 장르의 후속 연구를 위한 학술적 토대를 마련하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

This study aims to contrastively analyze the stylistic characteristics of three trombone sonatas by Eric Ewazen, Alec Wilder, and Stanley Friedman, composers who represent the diverse musical landscapes of the 20th century. Focusing on the distinct styles realized in each work—the Neo-Romantic style (Ewazen), the Classical-Jazz hybrid style (Wilder), and the contemporary idiom-based style (Friedman)—the research meticulously examines musical elements including harmony, rhythm, form, and melody.Specifically, adopting the perspective of a piano accompanist, the study focuses on the role of the piano accompaniment and the ensemble interaction with the trombone, clarifying the differences in musical expression dictated by the style. The analysis dissects the principles of jazz harmony evident in Alec Wilder’s work, such as the IV minor function, Alt Sus chords, and the use of Blue Notes. This is then compared with Eric Ewazen's rich Romantic harmony and Stanley Friedman's dissonant contemporary idiom to discuss how these three composers expanded the spectrum of 20th-century music through the sonata form.The findings of this study clearly demonstrate the stylistic contrast among the three works, providing performers with concrete, practical criteria essential for interpreting each piece. This research is expected to contribute to an enhanced stylistic understanding of the 20th-century trombone-piano duo repertoire and establish an academic foundation for subsequent research within the same genre.
