The purpose of this study is to develop an instructional strategy for teaching a high school after-school choir through blended learning using EdTech tools and to explore its applicability through validity verification of content by in-service music teachers.
With the expansion of digital technologies following the Fourth Industrial Revolution, digital education has become an integral part of school settings, and digital learning has been widely normalized. Meanwhile, music education has faced limitations in addressing diverse needs of learners through traditional face-to-face, performance-centered teaching methods alone. In particular, singing and choral instruction has continuously encountered structural challenges, including insufficient time for individual practice and feedback and differences in musical proficiency and educational level among vocal parts.
These changes in the educational setting highlight the need for developing new instructional strategies that go beyond merely supplementing traditional teaching methods and instead integrate online learning with offline performance activities in a systemic manner. Accordingly, this study proposes an instructional strategy for after-school choirs that incorporates individual online learning and digital feedback through EdTech tools, with consideration for continuous and autonomic characteristics of after-school choir programs, while preserving the musical and communal value of face-to-face choral activities.
The instructional plan developed in this study is targeted for a high school after-school choir, and therefore; it consists of six sessions based on an 80-minute class schedule. The plan is structured to utilize EdTech functions in a progressive manner, including part-specific practice materials, recording-based self-assessment, and visualized audio and video feedback. Learners are to engage in individual practice in an online environment to examine their vocal production, pitch accuracy and rhythm, and subsequently participate in offline choral practice, which will help fostering more active and self-directed learning. Teachers are able to reflect the outcomes of each learner’s individual practice in instruction, enabling the provision of individualized guidance according to each vocal part and individual proficiency levels.
The validity and applicability of the instructional plan were examined by four current secondary school music teachers. The results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed instructional model that connects online and offline activities and strengthens learners’ engagement in individual learning, which is particularly crucial in after-school choir instruction. Several areas for improvement were identified, including the need for clear guidance during the initial stage of using digital tools, practical limitations related to instructional time management, and the importance of guiding learners to maintain musical judgment rather than relying excessively on technology.
Based on these findings, this study suggests that an EdTech-based blended learning approach to after-school choral instruction can serve as a practical instructional alternative in secondary music education. Furthermore, the study proposes directions for developing an instructional approach in this digitalized education setting that may contribute to improving the quality of choral instruction and enhancing learners’ musical competencies, collaborative skills, and learning satisfaction. Future research is recommended to conduct empirical studies through actual classroom implementation and to explore the applicability of this instructional model across different school levels.
