Op. 7≫(Violin Sonata in a minor Op. 7, 1887)을 중심으로 그녀의 음악적 정체성과 작곡 기법을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

This study examines the musical identity and compositional techniques of British composer Ethel Mary Smyth (1858–1944) through an analysis of her Violin Sonata in a minor, Op. 7 (1887). Women composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries faced significant social and institutional barriers that largely confined them to salon music, art songs, and miniatures. Smyth was exceptional in this context: she received formal training at the Leipzig Conservatory and formed connections with Brahms, Clara Schumann, and Tchaikovsky, through which she absorbed the German Romantic tradition and symphonic thinking.- 90
The analysis covers all movements of the sonata, examining formal structure, harmony, rhythm, and motivic development. The work reveals how Smyth employed progressive harmonic language—including modal interchange, borrowed chords, chromatic mediants, and tritone relationships—within the framework of traditional Romantic sonata form. Particularly notable is her use of hemiola, which functions not merely as ornamental decoration but as a structural device integral to formal transitions and thematic development. The piano and violin emerge as equal partners, engaging in imitative dialogue and contrapuntal interplay that reflects Smyth's distinctive musical voice.
