Active seniors typically maintain relatively good health, economic resources, and a strong willingness to participate in society; however, they are also vulnerable to emotional isolation and weakened social support due to retirement, changes in social roles, and the contraction of social networks. Existing dance programs for older adults and studies on social support have largely focused on intrapersonal indicators such as physical function and depression, as well as the level of social support “received,” while relatively overlooking the bidirectional process through which support is both given and received. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop an integrated dance education program that uses dance as a medium to strengthen social support among active seniors by simultaneously activating the provision and receipt of emotional and instrumental support.
To achieve this goal, the study first examined the concept and characteristics of active seniors and theories of social support, and adopted the 2×2 framework of emotional/instrumental × provision/receipt from the Two-Way Social Support Scale (2-Way SSS) as its theoretical reference. Next, movement-based programs for seniors in Korea and abroad and a holistic model of integrated dance education were reviewed to derive an educational flow in which bodily sensation, emotional exchange, meaning-making, and social sharing form a continuous cycle. Based on this, a 10-session integrated dance education program was constructed under a three-stage structure of “Exploring–Interacting–Sharing and Expanding.” Each session was designed by linking its objectives, content, and teaching methods with specific functions of social support.
The developed program is organized into four phases—introduction, development 1, development 2, and closing—within a 90-minute format for each session. In the introduction phase, attendance checks, mood-sharing, and a common warm-up are used to assess participants’ engagement. In the development phases, activities such as self-exploration, relationship-centered tasks, and small-group and group dance work enable participants to repeatedly experience both the provision and receipt of emotional and instrumental support. In the closing phase, brief reflective activities are used to verbalize and consolidate the experiences of the session.
The results of this study are as follows. First, by directly mapping the four quadrants of the 2-Way SSS (emotional/instrumental × provision/receipt) onto the goals and activity design of integrated dance education, the study proposes a theoretical attempt to connect social support with dance education from the perspective of “how support is exchanged,” rather than treating it merely as a level of support received. Second, by structuring low-intensity yet highly participatory dance activities appropriate for active seniors into 10 sessions, and systematically linking each activity to emotional and instrumental support, the study provides a content framework that can be utilized in practice. Third, by centering the program on duet, small-group, and group dance activities that emphasize role rotation and shared outcomes, the study designs an experiential structure in which the provision and receipt of support can circulate in a balanced manner within a single session.
This study is limited in that it focused on program development and did not include actual implementation or effectiveness verification. Future research should apply the program in field settings such as welfare centers and cultural centers, and empirically examine changes in the provision and receipt of social support using the Korean version of the 2-Way SSS, along with indicators of social networks, affect, and quality of life. Nonetheless, by systematizing the content, methods, and organizing principles of an integrated dance education program aimed at strengthening social support among active seniors, this study offers foundational data for subsequent research and educational practice.
