This study investigates how temporality and materiality interact to generate emotional and aesthetic experiences within the residential environments designed by Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt. While conventional interpretations of high-end residential design have emphasized refined materials, visual perfection, and technical craftsmanship, Vervoordt’s work distinguishes itself by foregrounding the role of time and the inherent qualities of natural materials in shaping the resident’s emotional and sensory engagement. In his residential projects, temporality—expressed through patina, structural continuity, and variations of natural light—and materiality—embodied in texture, temperature, and authenticity—operate not as isolated concepts but as mutually reinforcing components that collectively construct the emotional depth and atmospheric richness of space.

To examine this dynamic interplay, the study first establishes conceptual definitions of temporality and materiality through a comprehensive literature review, then develops a three-step analytical framework consisting of contextual examination, onsite observation, and interpretive evaluation. Ten representative residential projects by Vervoordt were systematically analyzed using this framework, with particular attention to material patina, diurnal and seasonal light changes, preservation and layering strategies for existing structures, and multisensory interactions with the surrounding natural environment. The findings reveal that Vervoordt purposefully exposes signs of wear, cracking, and chromatic aging, presenting space as a living organism that evolves with the passage of time. These temporal layers cultivate emotional resonance between the resident and the environment by transforming everyday dwelling into a process of continuous perceptual and affective engagement.

Moreover, natural materials such as wood, stone, linen, and brick interact intimately with environmental factors—including light, humidity, and seasonal fluctuations—to generate complex tactile and visual experiences. Rather than serving merely as functional surfaces, these materials act as responsive mediums that capture subtle shifts in atmosphere, thereby expanding the residence into an experiential landscape where emotions accumulate and memory becomes spatially grounded. The analysis further reveals a strong influence of Japanese Wabi-Sabi philosophy across Vervoordt’s work. Its core principles—restraint, stillness, emptiness, and the acceptance of imperfection—reinforce the interplay between temporality and materiality, emphasizing authenticity and the aesthetic value of the incomplete. These philosophical underpinnings enable a spatial structure wherein time, material, and emotion remain in constant dialogue.

Taken together, Vervoordt’s residential spaces embody a timeless aesthetic articulated through the sequential structure of trace visualization, structural persistence, and sensory expansion. This study argues that his work provides a critical counterpoint to the conventional notion of luxury as visual flawlessness or material opulence, instead proposing an alternative paradigm in which the essence of high-end living lies in emotional sustainability and the capacity of a home to welcome the traces of life.

By situating temporality and materiality at the core of spatial interpretation, this research supplements theoretical foundations that have been underdeveloped within high-end residential design discourse. It further suggests that contemporary luxury housing should be redefined as an emotionally grounded environment that integrates memory, affect, and sensory experience into architectural practice. These insights hold significant academic and practical implications for shaping a Korean high-end residential paradigm where lived experience, material authenticity, and the passage of time form the fundamental basis for design.
