식물 자방(子房)의 상징성을 활용한 도자조형연구 : 실의 의미를 중심으로 = A Ceramic Art Study on the Symbolism of Plant Ovaries :Focusing on the Meaning of the Thread

국문 초록 (Abstract)

자연은 인간의 근원이자 가장 친숙한 존재로, 본능적으로 친밀감과 안정감을 느끼게 하는 대상이다. 특히 식물은 유전적 선호와 시각적 규칙성을 바탕으로 예술표현의 주요 주제로 활용되어 왔으나, 대부분 색채나 구조 등 외형적 아름다움에 머무르며 상징적 해석에는 한계를 지닌다.
본 연구는 이러한 한계를 넘어, 식물의 생식 기관인 자방의 기능적 특성과 상징적 의미를 인간의 성장 환경인 가정의 역할과 동일 선상에서 해석하고, 이를 도자 조형으로 시각화하고자 하였다.

연구자는 자방이 지닌 생명 주기 탄생·성장·분리가 인간의 생애주기와 동일한 맥락에 있음을 주목하였다. 식물학적 의의와 형태적 요소를 번식방법과 성장 단계에 따라 분석하였으며, 그 기능을 인간의 양육 환경과 연관 지어 상징성을 고찰하였다. 이를 토대로 형태적 변화를 폐쇄형, 일부 개방형, 개방형의 세 단계로 구분하고, 각 단계가 상징하는 가정의 기능을 조형적으로 구현하였다. 다음으로 실의 문화사적 개요와 의미를 조사하여 인간과 자연을 연결하는 매개이자 조형 작품의 주요 표현요소로 활용하였다. 번조 과정에서 연소되어 내부가 비워지는 과정은 자방이 종자를 위해 스스로 소모하면서도 생명과 장수를 기원하는 모체의 의미를 성찰시킨다.

본 연구는 자방의 형태를 단순히 재현하는 것을 넘어, 생명과 성장, 독립의 과정을 상징적으로 표현함으로써 식물의 생리적 기능과 인간의 성장적 경험을 연결하는 새로운 시각을 제시한다. 이를 통해 대상물의 시각적 차용에 국한되지 않고, 상징적 의미를 시각화하여 자연에 대한 새로운 해석을 가능하게 하였다. 나아가 관람자로 하여금 자연을 단순히 미적 대상으로 감상하는 것을 넘어, 자신의 성장 과정과 가정의 의미를 성찰하도록 유도한다.
이러한 연구결과는 자연의 상징성을 중심으로 한 예술 창작의 가능성을 확장하고, 도자공예 분야에서 조형 언어의 새로운 방향성을 제시하는 토대가 될 것으로 기대된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Nature is the origin of humanity and the most familiar presence, evoking instinctive feelings of intimacy and stability. In particular, plants, grounded in genetic preference and visual regularity, have long served as central subjects in artistic expression. However, most interpretations have remained within the realm of external beauty such as color and structure leaving the symbolic dimension relatively unexplored.
This study seeks to transcend such limitations by interpreting the functional characteristics and symbolic meanings of the plant ovary, a reproductive organ, in parallel with the nurturing role of the human home, and by visualizing this analogy through ceramic form.
The researcher focused on the ovary’s life cycle birth, growth, and separation which parallels the human life cycle. The biological significance and morphological elements of the ovary were analyzed according to reproductive modes and stages of growth, and their functions were examined in relation to the nurturing environment of human life. Based on these analyses, the formal transformations were categorized into three stages closed, partially open, and open forms each representing a different symbolic function of the home, which were then expressed sculpturally in ceramic works. Furthermore, the cultural and historical meanings of thread were investigated, and thread was employed as a mediating element connecting humans and nature as well as a major expressive component in the works. During the firing process, the thread burns away, leaving the interior hollow; this physical transformation metaphorically reflects the ovary’s self consuming nature for the sake of its seeds, thereby evoking the maternal symbolism of sacrifice, life, and continuity.
This study goes beyond the mere reproduction of the ovary’s physical form, symbolically expressing the processes of life, growth, and independence, and thereby proposing a new perspective that connects the physiological functions of plants with human emotional experience. Rather than limiting itself to the visual borrowing of natural objects, the research visualizes symbolic meanings grounded in personal experience, enabling a renewed interpretation of nature. Furthermore, it encourages viewers to reflect not only on nature as an aesthetic subject but also on their own growth and the meaning of home.
The results of this study are expected to expand the possibilities of art creation based on the symbolism of nature and to serve as a foundation for presenting new directions in the formative language of ceramic art.
