Since the 2022 pandemic, restrictions on outdoor activities have been relaxed, leading to a surge in popularity for offline spaces, with pop-up stores becoming a hot topic and being perceived as a new playground for people. In fact, pop-up stores existed before that, but they gained explosive popularity in the 2020s. The influence of the endemic period was clearly a factor, but the bigger influence can be seen as changes in the spatial composition and deployment method of pop-up stores. While pop-up stores prior to the 2020s focused solely on selling products, they have since evolved beyond simply selling items to embodying the brand's intended worldview, allowing visitors to experience it and have a truly special experience. To provide people with special experiences, brands create their own concepts, artifacts that make non-existent things feel real, and recreate these in pop-up stores. So, they feel as if they have escaped reality and entered a virtual world, and have an experience where they cannot distinguish between reality and virtuality, when people visit the pop-up stores. An artifact that makes the nonexistent seem real, and an experience that blurs the lines between reality and the virtual. This phenomena occurring in pop-up stores resembles the concept of "simulacre" proposed by Jean Baudrillard, and pop-up stores can be seen as architectural spaces where phenomena of the simulacre occurs. Based on this, the plan of this study is to identify the architectural elements of pop-up stores and the components of simulacre, and through case analysis, to analyze how the phenomenon of simulacre is architecturally developed and how it is expressed in each case, and to indicate the scale of the degree of expression. By analyzing and organizing previous research related to pop-up stores, we derive new architectural elements of pop-up stores based on them and derive elements of simulacre through the ‘four-stage transformation process of images’ proposed by Baudrillard. Using the derived elements, this study aims to derive results by analyzing 10 pop-up stores in the 2020s. The architectural elements of a pop-up store are categorized into five: spatial composition, exterior design, movement plan, sensory production, and spatial transition, and, elements of simulacre are four in total: reproduction, dematerialization, collapse of the boundary with reality, and more realistic images. Most of the analyzed cases architecturally developed the concept of the brand and an overall phenomena of simulacre occurred. However, among them, the pop-up stores of Jardin Reve, Saero, and Samsung captured the stage where the brand's concept was reproduced and the physical form, such as the architectural structure and exhibited sculptures, was dematerialized, but did not reach the stage of blurring the boundary between reality and the virtual. Through case analysis, the results show that the phenomena of simulacre is reflected and occurring in various ways, and that pop-up stores are not simply spaces for buying and selling goods, but spaces where brands unfold their own concepts and where people experience the simulacre. Through this results, the pop-up store shows how architecture can exist in a modern era overflowing with symbols and images, suggesting a new direction for architecture. This study aims to understand the simulacral and spatial characteristics of modern pop-up stores and to use them as basic research data for future related research and practical design.
