This study addresses the rigidity and regulation of time as a critical issue experienced
by individuals in contemporary society and visualizes the passage of time through the
fluidity of slip. Within social structures, time is perceived as a linear and homogeneous
flow governed by efficiency and regularity; however, in the realm of art, it is experienced
as a multilayered and irregular form through sensory perception and lived experience.
By employing the material properties and fluid characteristics of ceramic slip, the researcher
sought to translate the essence of time into a new sculptural language. Physically, time
is grounded in the principles of continuity and causality, while philosophically, it is defined
within the relationship between being and change. Yet in art, such concepts shift toward
the dimensions of emotion and experience, reconstituted through the language of matter
and sensation. This study, therefore, finds its significance in the visual exploration of
time’s multilayered attributes within the domain of sculptural art.
The theoretical investigation understood the flow of time not as a linear progression,
but as a complex structure of continuity and rupture, condensation and diffusion. Focusing
on the concept of “fluidity,” the study analyzed the physical characteristics of liquids
and gases, confirming that the movement of matter—altered by external forces, viscosity,
and gravity—contains expressive potential for the visualization of time in sculptural art.
This discussion provided a theoretical foundation for understanding the physical properties
of slip and extending them into visual form.
Slip, a material that exists between the boundaries of liquid and solid, flows, coagulates,
and leaves traces under the influence of external conditions and gravity. The researcher
interpreted these natural traces formed by the flowing slip as representations of the
passage of time, reconstructing their fluid shapes into sculptural images. The traces of
slip reveal the continuity of unceasing time, while the process through which matter
autonomously forms shape functions as a sculptural record of time—emerging at the
intersection of chance and intention. This approach thus serves as an attempt to visually
capture the perception of time through the material’s physical transformations.
In the production stage, the study applied openwork and relief techniques, focusing
on the formal changes occurring in the viscosity, gravity, and coagulation processes of
slip. The openwork technique spatially expanded the sense of time by inducing the
transmission of light and shadow through partially removed surfaces, while the relief
technique emphasized accumulation and trace through the layering and texturing of clay.
The naturally formed surface traces, created as slip flowed under gravity, visually evoked
the passage of time and revealed how material responses themselves became an integral
part of form generation.
The completed works comprise two series: the formal and the informal. The formal
series visualized the homogeneous flow of time within the framework of order and structure,
while the informal series expressed the irregular transformations of time through the
fluidity and chance-driven nature of slip. Rather than being oppositional, the two series
represent different sculptural interpretations of a shared theme—the flow of time. Through
this, the study confirmed that the traces left by slip’s movement act both as records
of time and as processes of material formation.
Ultimately, this research visualized the flow of time through the fluidity of slip and
explored the continuity and transformation of time through both formal and informal
sculptural expressions. It demonstrates that ceramic sculpture can expand the sensory
experience of time by mediating the flow of material.
