This purpose of study is to conduct a multidimensional analysis of differences in the perception and practice of sport ethics between student athletes and non-athlete students. Specifically, it seeks to identify values that are commonly emphasized by both groups as well as elements perceived differently, thereby providing a deeper understanding of the essential meaning of sport ethics.
The participants consisted of 409 middle and high school students in Seoul, including 172 student athletes and 237 non-athlete students. The survey was conducted from September 28 to October 16, 2024, and in-depth interviews were carried out with 10 participants (five student athletes and five non-athlete students). Research instruments included a questionnaire developed with 40 core sport ethics-related keywords, word cloud visualization analysis, and in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed through frequency analysis, keyword analysis, and qualitative content analysis.
The findings revealed clear distinctions between the two groups. Student athletes primarily internalized sport ethics within structured environments such as competitions and training, emphasizing normative values such as fairness, responsibility, self-discipline, and adherence to rules. Word cloud analysis further highlighted keywords such as “team benefit,” “loyalty,” “leadership,” and “athlete’s duty,” indicating that student athletes perceive sport ethics not merely as abstract norms but as practical guidelines directly linked to performance and team success. In contrast, non-athlete students acquired sport ethics through physical education classes, peer activities, and daily play, placing emphasis on relational values such as honesty, consideration, emotional regulation, and cooperation. They frequently selected keywords such as “trust,” “conscience,” and “social equality,” perceiving sport as a context for moral growth and community building.
In-depth interviews supported these findings. Student athletes tended to internalize ethical attitudes by observing exemplary behaviors of coaches or senior athletes and by fulfilling responsibilities in competition. Non-athlete students, on the other hand, reported learning values such as “putting people first,” “building fair relationships,” and “the importance of encouragement” through teachers, peers, and professional athletes as role models. Moreover, mutual recognition between the groups was evident: student athletes reflected on the more relaxed attitudes of non-athlete students, while non-athlete students positively valued the responsibility and sportsmanship of student athletes, suggesting reciprocal learning effects.
In conclusion, the study demonstrates that sport ethics is not limited to rule compliance but constitutes a dynamic value system shaped by participation environments, social relationships, and group identities. Accordingly, sport ethics education requires differentiated approaches that reflect the unique contexts of each group. For student athletes, simulation of conflict situations during competition and ethics-oriented leadership education for coaches are recommended, while for non-athlete students, programs emphasizing cooperation, consideration, and emotional regulation are more suitable. Furthermore, at the institutional and policy levels, the development of evaluation systems that incorporate relational and community-oriented competencies, along with teacher training and the provision of educational resources, is essential to strengthen sport ethics education.
