This study examines how Paul DeMarinis and Byungjun Kwon transform the temporal structures and sonic traces generated by the operations of mechanical devices into artistic practice, drawing on Wolfgang Ernst’s concepts of Eigenzeit (proper time) and “noise.” Although both artists construct sound by directly designing circuits, sensors, and mechanical apparatuses, their approaches diverge significantly in how they treat the layered temporality produced by technology and the manifestation of noise as its temporal stratum. Rather than framing these differences as purely acoustic or compositional matters, this study analyzes how each artist interprets the autonomous temporal order generated by technological devices and the sonic residues that constitute its temporal appearance.
According to Ernst, technical media generate micro-temporal regimes that differ from human experiential and narrative time; within this view, repetition, delay, and electrical rhythms inside the device constitute an independent temporal order. This emergent structure corresponds to what Ernst terms Eigenzeit—a time intrinsic to the device that is neither subordinated to human meaning-making nor embedded within historical context, but instead appears in the very moment the device records and renews its own present through operation. Noise, in this framework, functions as the perceptible point at which this intrinsic time becomes sensible. Rather than a failure of information, noise is understood as a stratum in which the material conditions of technical media reveal shifts within operational time. Building on this theoretical perspective, this study reconceptualizes noise as a visible and audible expression of technological temporality and employs it as a primary criterion in analyzing the artistic practices of DeMarinis and Kwon.
Paul DeMarinis reconstructs the outer layer of obsolete technologies and analog recording media to reactivate the temporal remains of missing or forgotten technologies as present auditory events. His work meticulously exposes how micro-temporal processes inside the device become sonically manifest through scratches, dust, and distortions. In The Edison Effect, for instance, noise is not treated as a defect to be removed but as an event in which the technological time of the past reanimates itself within the present. Through this strategy, DeMarinis expands the technological temporality of the machine beyond a mere archival layer, presenting it as a structure that re-operates within contemporary sensory experience. His practice thereby produces a nonlinear sense of time in which past and present overlap, revealing a non-narrative temporal structure that emerges through the sensory mediation of technological events.
Kwon Byungjun, by contrast, explores how noise unfolds into a relational form of perception through the vibrations and frictions generated by his self-made robots, as well as the displacements and overlaps produced by location-based listening systems. He reframes mechanical operation as an irregular event freed from criteria of efficiency and perfection, emphasizing the points at which mechanical noise enters into contact with human perception. The subtle sounds produced by inefficient robotic movements disclose the device’s internal temporality while simultaneously being reorganized according to the movements and listening conditions of each viewer, forming a shared sensory environment. In the location-based listening system, one person’s listening spills into another’s auditory space, transforming sound into a medium that generates relations within the environment. In this process, noise expands beyond a mechanical event to become a social and relational temporality intertwined with human experience and interaction, producing sensory scenes where machine time intersects with human time.
Taken together, the practices of the two artists demonstrate that the temporality and noise of mechanical media materialize in distinct ways within artistic practice. Whereas DeMarinis undertakes a vertical excavation in which technological traces summon the temporality of the past into the present, Kwon presents a horizontal expansion that reveals a shared machine–human temporality through incomplete devices and relational listening environments. Their works show that noise discloses the intrinsic time of the machine while being reconfigured within human perception, memory, and interaction.
The temporalities articulated by the two artists do more than restore past traces; they operate as events activated within the present, inviting a rethinking of how time is understood. These practices introduce new interpretive possibilities through the sounds and operational residues produced by technological devices, enabling a multilayered perception of temporal structure. Ultimately, their works prompt a reconsideration of the formation and transmission of narrative itself, expanding the ways in which the present may be understood. Such an orientation moves beyond linear historical conceptions and points toward the possibility of an alternative historiography grounded in intersecting temporalities and sensory relations.
At the same time, Ernst’s analysis, by emphasizing the operational logic and temporal structures of technical media, leaves insufficient room for human involvement and sensory interaction. This study addresses the theoretical gap produced by this technodeterministic tendency through the artistic practices of DeMarinis and Kwon, demonstrating how machine time may be reconfigured at perceptual and relational levels. In doing so, it proposes an expanded theoretical framework for interpreting the temporality of technical media.
