This study begins from the perspective of understanding everyday objects not merely as utilitarian tools, but as living objects that mediate sensory experience. While modern living environments have long been shaped by mass-produced products emphasizing function and efficiency, objects reflecting users’ preferences, sensibilities, and emotions have increasingly come to define the atmosphere of space. Loudspeakers likewise possess the potential to be reinterpreted beyond technology-driven electronic devices, emerging as sculptural objects that integrate visual and auditory experience. However, commercial production environments continue to favor repetitive rectilinear forms, limiting the visual possibilities of loudspeaker design. In response, this research proposes the loudspeaker not as a purely structural apparatus for containing sound, but as a sculptural object that visualizes the sensory qualities of sound.
Sound is both a physical phenomenon defined by parameters such as frequency, amplitude, and harmonics, and an experiential medium that evokes impressions of rhythm, weight, texture, and atmosphere. This study translates sound beyond an auditory-centered framework into visual and sculptural elements such as line, surface, and rhythm. To this end, the physical characteristics of sound—including directivity, reflection, absorption, and diffraction—were examined, and its flow was analyzed through waveform graphs, frequency spectra, and harmonic structures. Representations of sound in visual culture were also referenced to explore methods of transforming temporal sonic changes into spatial and three-dimensional structures. Through this process, sound was understood not merely as a physical wave, but as a formative element shaping spatial atmosphere and emotional experience.
Rather than focusing on the engineering optimization of acoustic performance, this research approaches loudspeaker production as form-based experimentation grounded in sculptural interpretation. While enclosure structure, internal volume, port configuration, and driver arrangement were considered, the objective was not technological advancement but the fulfillment of minimal structural conditions necessary to convey the sensory image of sound. The study prioritizes a relationship in which function supports sculptural language, rather than the optimization of specific frequency responses. In this context, music editing processes were reinterpreted as sculptural operations, enabling the translation of sonic flow into formal flow.
During fabrication, sculptural principles derived from drawing and 3D modeling were translated into physically realizable structures. The material properties of metal, resin, wood, and silicone were compared to examine how resonance characteristics, damping, stiffness, and surface texture correspond to auditory impressions. In parallel, 3D printing, CNC machining, and metal forming techniques were employed to realize forms balancing aesthetic expression and function. Internal structures were designed with consideration given to driver placement, volume calculation, and the positioning of sound-absorbing materials.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential to expand the loudspeaker beyond a functional device into a sculptural living object that mediates spatial atmosphere and emotional experience by reinterpreting the physical and sensory qualities of sound through visual and sculptural language. By translating the flow of sound into the flow of form, this research broadens the expressive possibilities of loudspeaker design beyond a technology-centered paradigm and suggests that technology-based objects can serve as meaningful subjects within contemporary craft and art.
