This study aims to explore the possibilities and directions of an integrated approach that combines Character Masks and Animal Movement Training in order to enhance the physical credibility of character embodiment in performing arts. By complementing the limitations of text-centered interpretive approaches, this research seeks to investigate methods through which actors can expand their bodily awareness and more actively embody characters with complex and layered forms of existence.

Harriet, the protagonist of Darwin’s Tortoise, is a character in whom human cognitive and social capacities and non-human physiological structures operate simultaneously. Such a character cannot be fully realized through psychological interpretation alone. Taking Harriet as a case example, this study examines how body-based training influences the process of character construction.

To this end, the thesis first conducts a theoretical review focused on the role of the body in character creation, including body-centered acting approaches, the physical functions of mask training, and the non-human bodily principles underlying animal movement training. Through this theoretical inquiry, the study identifies how masks dismantle actors’ habitual bodily patterns and generate new centers of gravity, gaze structures, and breathing rhythms, while animal movement training enables the embodiment of non-human bodily logic. These findings suggest that, for characters like Harriet—whose human and non-human layers are intertwined—physical approaches function as a crucial complement to textual analysis.

Within the practical workshops conducted in this study, three stages of exploration were undertaken. First, Character Masks were used to disrupt fixed bodily patterns and to investigate the emergence of new movement impulses. Second, Animal Movement Training based on the center of gravity, gait, and breathing of a tortoise was applied to embody Harriet’s non-human physiological rhythm. Finally, the movement of a second animal was explored to expand character energy and to supplement Harriet’s social and personality-related dimensions.

As a result of these training processes, noticeable changes were observed in the researcher’s bodily usage, including shifts in center of gravity, gaze structure, breathing patterns, and responsiveness of movement. Harriet’s non-human rhythm became more clearly articulated, and a movement-centered mode of acting—where the body generates meaning prior to interpretive or psychological framing—was made possible. In addition, surveys conducted with both trained and untrained participants indicated that body-based approaches effectively strengthened the character’s sense of presence.

Therefore, this study confirms that actors can reconstruct their habitual bodily patterns and creatively expand bodily dimensions not explicitly indicated by the text through the use of Character Masks and Animal Movement Training. To embody characters that simultaneously encompass human, non-human, and social layers, sustained bodily exploration and training are essential. This integrated physical approach is proposed as a practical methodology capable of rendering complex contemporary characters more vivid and dynamically embodied in modern performance practice.
