The spatial paradigm of contemporary public libraries has undergone a significant transformation, shifting from collection-centered environments to open, visually connected, and activity-oriented spaces. This shift positions libraries not only as repositories of information but also as public platforms where reading, learning, and community interaction coexist. As complex mixed-use facilities increasingly adopt open-plan configurations to accommodate diverse user activities, understanding how openness is constructed and perceived has become a critical design issue.
This study examines nine Japanese public libraries built after 2015, focusing on how open-plan spaces organize visual structure, spatial continuity, and perceptual connections through their spatial components. Although libraries and mixed-use office facilities differ in programmatic goals, both require flexible layouts, clear visual flows, and spatial structures that support interaction among varied user groups. For this reason, recent Japanese public libraries—characterized by low-height bookshelves, transparent sightlines, adaptable furniture, and integrated reading spaces—serve as ideal testbeds for analyzing the perceptual mechanisms of open-plan environments.
The research employs Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA) using DepthmapX to compare structural openness (Level 1) and actual perceptual conditions shaped by furniture and shelving (Level 2). By normalizing grid size and analysis height, the study evaluates how connectivity and integration change across three spatial types: fully open Type A, partially open Type B, and selectively open Type C. The results reveal that while Type A maintains the highest structural openness, it also experiences the largest decline in visual connectivity when furniture is introduced. Type B shows localized concentrations of centrality, and Type C exhibits the smallest variation between Level 1 and Level 2, reflecting its inherently segmented spatial order. These findings indicate that open-plan libraries produce distinctly different perceptual structures—structures that cannot be explained solely by physical openness, but by the interaction of structural frames, furniture layout, and visual barriers.
Based on this analysis, the study translates the spatial logics of open-plan libraries into design principles applicable to mixed-use office facilities. Concepts such as graduated openness, centrality modulation, and level-based visual continuity offer strategies for managing relationships among programs with varying privacy or interaction demands. The integration of voids, multi-level sightlines, and furniture-based perceptual zoning further provides a framework for designing environments that support collaboration, workplace flexibility, and spatial clarity. The results demonstrate that spatial perception—rather than formal openness alone—plays a decisive role in shaping user experience and programmatic organization in dense, multi-layered facilities.
This study thus contributes methodological and design-oriented insights: it verifies the effectiveness of VGA for analyzing perceptual structures in open-plan environments, and proposes a transferable set of design principles that extend from public libraries to mixed-use office facilities. By revealing how structural and furniture-based elements collectively construct visual organization, the research lays the foundation for developing more adaptive, user-centered open-plan spatial systems in future architectural and urban design.
