This study examined the effects of a 19-session mother–child clay art
therapy program on emotional and behavioral difficulties in early elementary
school children, as well as changes in maternal parenting attitudes. Children who
experience emotional dysregulation, impulsive anger expression, and recurrent
relational conflicts are at increased risk for maladaptive developmental
trajectories, highlighting the importance of early, integrative interventions that
address emotional, behavioral, and relational domains simultaneously.
Clay was employed as the primary therapeutic medium due to its distinctive
sensory and symbolic properties, including tactile feedback, plasticity, resistance,
and transformability. Engagement with clay allows children to externalize and
regulate emotional experiences through bodily sensation and symbolic expression.
The use of colored clay and slip further facilitates emotional differentiation and
modulation. Within a mother–child format, shared clay work also provides
opportunities for relational attunement, emotional responsiveness, and adjustment
of parenting behaviors. The program was structured into four sequential phases: emotion awareness, emotional expression, relational restoration, and self-integration. To examine pre- and post-intervention changes, standardized assessment tools were administered, including the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL 6–18), Teacher’s Report Form (TRF), Youth Self-Report (YSR), Parenting Attitude Test–Second Edition (PAT-2), and the House–Tree–Person (HTP) drawing test. Observations of session processes, verbal interactions, and artwork were additionally reviewed to support interpretive understanding of change processes.
Results indicated a reduction in children’s overall problem behaviors, with decreases observed in both internalizing and externalizing domains across home and school contexts. Changes were also evident in children’s self-reported emotional experiences, including reduced negative emotional perception and expanded emotional awareness. Maternal parenting attitudes showed a general shift away from control- and punishment-oriented responses toward more coordinated and emotionally responsive patterns. Projective drawing results further reflected reduced emotional tension and expanded self-expression in children.
Overall, the findings suggest that mother–child clay art therapy, integrating sensory, symbolic, and relational experiences, may serve as a meaningful therapeutic approach for supporting emotional regulation, reducing behavioral difficulties, and promoting more stable mother–child interactions in early childhood.
