In the flow in which contemporary art continuously expands its boundaries, media art is reconstructing the understanding of human visual and bodily cognition as a new artistic form that converges technology, the senses, and spatial experience. Since the twenty-first century, media art has not only innovated modes of artistic expression but also challenged and expanded the perceptual structure of the audience itself. Among such practices, the internationally noted convergent art collective teamLab has deeply intervened in visitors’ bodily experience through distinctive interactive settings and flexible methods of spatial composition.
Meanwhile, the perceptual phenomenology of the French philosopher Merleau-Ponty, which has been established as one of the major philosophical currents since the twentieth century, has gradually been introduced into the field of art and has suggested new possibilities of interpretation. Unlike earlier views that understood perception as a passive input of external stimuli, Merleau-Ponty emphasized the mutual intertwining and coexistence of the body and the world, thereby providing a profound philosophical framework for understanding the interaction between spectators and works in media art. In this context, this study attempts a new theoretical approach to understand the relationship between “boundary” and “infinity” in media art by combining Merleau-Ponty’s perceptual phenomenology with teamLab’s immersive media art experience. More specifically, focusing on teamLab’s works, it aims to explore how spectators’ bodily perception is reconfigured and how such perceptual mechanisms reveal the infinity of spatial boundaries.
Existing studies on media art have mainly focused on technological implementation, spatial arrangement, and the artistic expression of works, whereas philosophical interpretations of the deep mechanisms of interaction between spectators’ bodily perception and the works have been relatively insufficient. Although Merleau-Ponty’s perceptual phenomenology provides a key theoretical foundation for understanding the relationship between the body and the world, it has been used primarily in interpretive frameworks for traditional art, medicine, and psychology, and it has not been sufficiently adapted to the interactivity, technicality, and spatial extensibility that characterize immersive media art. Research that discusses media art within this theoretical framework still requires supplementation. In addition, although teamLab’s works, which represent notable achievements in the field of immersive media art, exhibit distinctive forms such as the “dissolution of boundaries” and “symbiosis” with the work, philosophically deep deconstruction of these forms remains insufficient, and thus such works have not provided a theoretical reference that can be borrowed for similar creations; moreover, an academic-level theoretical framework for the cognitive mechanisms of immersive art is also inadequate. Accordingly, by combining Merleau-Ponty’s perceptual phenomenology with teamLab’s practice, this study seeks to supplement the research gap in the intersection between theory and practice and to present a new horizon of thought for the cognitive interpretation and creative development of immersive media art.
The study first organized the developmental trajectory, basic concepts, and core propositions of perceptual phenomenology through prior research. On this basis, it examined in depth Merleau-Ponty’s concepts of corporeality, including the body schema, motor intentionality, intercorporeality, and reversibility, and reinterpreted the concept of space upon this theoretical foundation. Here, space is understood no longer as a physical three-dimensional container but as a field generated through the body’s motor intentionality, reachability, and experiences of depth. Subsequently, the study conducted an in-depth investigation of immaterial space and the concept of boundary, comparing differences and changes from traditional space, and analyzing how immaterial space is formed in media art and how the fluidity, transference, and continuity of boundaries appear within it. Furthermore, based on theories of spatial composition in immersive media art, it examined the spatial roles of light, shadow, and sound, the interactive technologies and modes of spatial generation in media space, and the spatial characteristics of existing immersive exhibitions. After synthesizing these prior studies, the study returned to Merleau-Ponty’s perceptual phenomenology to discuss the intertwined structure of body and world, immaterial space, and mechanisms of digital boundaries, and analyzed how light, shadow, sound, and interactive technologies generate new spatial experiences in the context of immersive media art. These theoretical perspectives were then specifically introduced into teamLab’s creative practice, and teamLab’s immersive spaces were systematically analyzed and interpreted in a phenomenological manner with “infinity” as the central theme.
As a result of analyzing five works by teamLab, the infinity of immersion is defined essentially as an “unexplored generative experience.” This does not mean infinity in physical scale, but rather refers to an experience in which spectators recognize the “incompleteness of images, the possibility that space can be further extended, and the deferral of time.” Its core lies in constructing an immersive system with characteristics such as fluidity and layering through three dimensions: light, shadow, and space. The core logic of teamLab’s interactive infinity is an “open system that is continuously generated,” which is not a discrete structure of pre-set “trigger–response,” but corresponds to an open-world experience in a phenomenological sense.
The infinity of teamLab’s space appears as follows. First, it is the indeterminacy of space, which is difficult to understand through fixed standards and provides a sense of openness in which “there is more in what cannot be seen.” Second, it is the fluidity of space, in which space operates not as a fixed form but as a dynamic fluid that creates new forms at every moment through the audience’s actions. Third, it is the transference of space, which dismantles physical visual boundaries and allows space to move and be reconstructed among the work, the body, and the interface, thereby forming a topological network. Together, these three modes constitute “spatial infinity,” providing spectators with a spatial experience that is continuously topologized and generated.
The conclusions derived through this study are as follows. First, the immersiveness of teamLab’s works goes beyond visual and technical dimensions and expands into a reconfiguration of the “body–world relationship,” functioning as a field that continuously generates the audience. Second, interaction dismantles the “input–output” logic and forms a “closed action circuit,” thereby constructing an unpredictable dynamic ecosystem. Third, spatial infinity is not a matter of large-scale architecture but a “generative spatial logic” that creates a nonlinear topological space. Fourth, the consistency of the triple-infinity framework was verified through five cases. Fifth, at the theoretical level, the study elevates immersion, interaction, and spatial research into a phenomenological “analysis of world structure” and proposes an “experientially accessible philosophical structure.” This framework can be applied to multiple immersive works beyond teamLab, provides a new perspective for understanding human–machine–space relations in the digital era, and lays a foundation for future research on immersive spaces.
Although this study analyzed teamLab’s digital immersive works through a triple-infinity model of “immersion–interaction–space” with phenomenology as the core theoretical framework and constructed an innovative theoretical structure, it has several limitations. Because the cases are limited to five works by teamLab, the results have specificity; because the perspective is centered on phenomenology, discussions of sociological and political-aesthetic dimensions are insufficient. In addition, because technical details are not disclosed, the transparency of the technical analysis is limited, and because large-scale on-site audience research was not conducted, differences in experience were not systematically demonstrated. Future research can expand the range of cases to verify the universality of the model, build a critical research framework through multidisciplinary approaches, deepen the analysis of technical logic through interdisciplinary collaboration, introduce empirical methods to conduct audience research, or explore deeper philosophical questions such as how technology reshapes perceptual structures. Overall, this study provides a theoretical tool for understanding teamLab’s immersive art and lays the groundwork for subsequent research in related fields, and it is necessary to continue deepening the inquiry at the levels of theory, technology, and experience in order to construct a philosophy of space and perception suited to the digital era.
