(This is what it is to love an artist), ‘사랑하는 오르페우스에게’(Dear Orpheus)의 음악적 특징과 서사적 기능을 분석하였다.

This study examines Matthew Aucoin’s opera Eurydice(2020) and explores how the ancient Orpheus myth is reinterpreted and renarrated in the context of contemporary opera. Aucoin’s Eurydice, based on Sarah Ruhl’s play of the same name (2003), inherits the long-standing operatic lineage of the Orpheus myth established since Jacopo Peri’s Euridice(1600), while reconfiguring the classical narrative from a renewed perspective. In particular, this research analyzes how the work restructures the myth around Eurydice’s viewpoint-traditionally relegated to a peripheral role-and how themes of memory, language, and choice serve to expand her narrative and psychological presence within the opera.
Chapter 1 investigates the reception and transformation of the Orpheus myth throughout opera history. Whereas early operas by Peri and Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) centered on Orpheus’s musical power and heroic agency, works by Christoph Willibald Gluck and Joseph Haydn emphasized emotional sincerity and moral discourse. In the nineteenth century, Jacques Offenbach reinterpreted the myth through satire, and in the twentieth century, Harrison Birtwistle expanded its philosophical dimensions through temporal and psychological fragmentation. Within this historical trajectory, Aucoin’s Eurydice represents a fundamental shift by foregrounding Eurydice’s inner world and sensory experience as the core of the narrative.
Chapter 2 analyzes the artistic background of Aucoin and Ruhl and discusses the creative context of the opera. Ruhl’s play reconstructs the myth through Eurydice’s fragmented memory, confusion, and linguistic recovery, while Aucoin’s score employs contrasting timbres, non-functional harmonies, and irregular rhythms to musically render her shifting perceptions. The relationships with her father in the underworld, the stones’ symbolic silence, and Orpheus’s music function as key dramatic devices through which Eurydice comes to understand and define her own world. These elements illuminate her transformation from a passive figure into an active agent within the narrative.
Chapter 3 focuses on the musical and dramatic functions of Eurydice’s three arias ‘There was a roar,’ ‘This is what it is to love an artist’ and ‘Dear Orpheus’. The first aria portrays the chaos of death through tense harmonies and fractured rhythms; the second reflects on the dissonance between art, life, and emotional reality; and the final aria centers on restored memory and personal choice. Aucoin’s use of open-ended, non-cadential harmonic structures symbolically expresses Eurydice’s autonomous decision-making, revealing her as a figure who shapes the narrative rather than simply enduring its tragic outcomes.
In conclusion, Eurydice recontextualizes the linear structure of the classical myth through a contemporary sensibility, expanding the narrative and musical possibilities of opera. Aucoin and Ruhl explore the boundaries between language and music, humanity and transcendence, offering a work that redefines the Orpheus myth as an “art of memory.” This study suggests that Eurydice exemplifies a philosophical direction for 21 century opera one that reconsiders the nature of human experience and the expressive potential of the operatic form.
