Despite the continuous advancement of autonomous driving and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), urban pedestrian accidents remain a critical challenge. In particular, occlusion-induced accidents—where pedestrians suddenly emerge from behind obstacles such as illegally parked vehicles—cause significant perception delays in the system, often leading to fatal consequences. However, current safety assessment protocols, such as NCAP and international regulations, primarily focus on stationary vehicles or scenarios with clear visibility, which limits their effectiveness in verifying frequent urban pedestrian cut-out risks.
This study proposes realistic pedestrian cut-out evaluation scenarios based on urban accident data analysis to verify the perception and control performance of autonomous driving systems. Vehicle tests were conducted using a high-precision GPS target system, analyzing the operational characteristics of Forward Collision Avoidance (FCA) across various overlap ratios (25%, 50%, and 75%) and driving speeds.
The experimental results confirmed that higher overlap ratios lead to delayed perception-judgment timing, resulting in a sharp decline in braking stability and comfort. Through statistical regression analysis of the test data, this study quantitatively demonstrated the causal relationship between occlusion-induced perception delay and sudden braking. Notably, under high-speed conditions with a 75% overlap, perception delay caused the system to exceed the design limits for passenger comfort and safety (ISO 15622) and enter the emergency braking range.
Based on these findings, this study proposes the 75% overlap pedestrian cut-out scenario as a critical limit scenario for safety verification. Furthermore, moving beyond the traditional binary evaluation of "collision or no-collision," this research introduces "Critical FCW_TTC" as a new quantitative performance index, representing the minimum time required to ensure safe and comfortable control across various driving speeds.
