Electroadhesion technology differs from conventional adhesion control methods in that it can be implemented with only an electroadhesion pad and a high voltage power circuitry, providing a simple structure, enabling adhesion to most substrate materials without surface damage, and allowing reversible control. Owing to these characteristics, research on electroadhesion has been actively conducted. However, electroadhesion also exhibits several drawbacks, such as significantly lower adhesion forces compared to other adhesion mechanisms, the necessity of high voltage, and pronounced variations in adhesion performance depending on the material properties of the substrate, all of which limit its applicability across various fields.
As a fundamental study to address these issues, the present work investigates the adhesion characteristics of electroadhesion pads fabricated using a copper thin film and an elastomer under different operational states. To systematically examine variations in adhesion performance, two materials each from metals, polymers, and ceramics were selected, and their dimensional specifications and surface roughness were maintained uniformly. Adhesion responses under several kilovolts of applied voltage were then analyzed. Furthermore, a measurement system capable of accurately realizing the detachment state of electroadhesion and precisely quantifying electroadhesive forces was developed. Based on the measured electroadhesive forces, detachment conditions that maximize the adhesion force were identified, and the causal relationships between adhesion performance and parameters such as voltage magnitude, voltage application and removal time, substrate surface roughness, and the number of sliding actions were analyzed. Through this analysis, the operating conditions, surface roughness levels, and voltage conditions that maximize electroadhesion performance were determined. Using these electroadhesion characteristics, a material-transport structure employing an electroadhesion pad and a robotic arm was designed.
This study examined methods for maximizing electroadhesion force on various materials through control of the detachment state of the electroadhesion pad and analyzed the integrated electroadhesion characteristics associated with voltage, time, and substrate surface roughness. The operating conditions proposed in this study demonstrate applicability in environments involving diverse substrate materials. In particular, the reversible adhesion characteristics of electroadhesion indicate strong potential for use in automated industrial processes and soft robotics. Future work will aim to theoretically analyze and further optimize the operating conditions proposed herein. Such follow up research is expected to contribute significantly to the development of electroadhesion based transport systems.
