This study aims to re-examine the artistic potential of Virtual Reality (VR) art in contemporary art, shifting its perception from a mere tool for escapism through spectacle to a “space of thought” that expands sensory-based lived experiences into subjective thinking. Today, VR technology has reached a stage where it provides realistic experiences comparable to reality, transcending physical constraints of time and space through immediate interaction via advanced interfaces and powerful immersion. The advancement of electronic technology evokes the concept of cybernetics, which views human-machine interaction as a process of feedback, and enables the realization of “behaviourist art,” where the mode of experience within a system changing through interaction exists as art itself. Consequently, the spectator, who directly intervenes in the transformation of the VR space, can achieve presence within the virtual world as a subject possessing “distributed authorship,” actively enjoying the environment.
Such technological achievements are rooted in the long-standing idealistic desire of humanity to realize a perfect illusion indistinguishable from reality. In art history, immersive media have been the result of mobilizing the technological capabilities of each era to implement maximum illusion. Furthermore, interactions within VR lead spectators to misidentify the system's reactions as their own subjective thought processes, and the overwhelming sense of “presence” realized through this serves as a mechanism that can erase “critical distance” regarding specific intentions. Paradoxically, however, VR technology, which inevitably requires the physical intervention of bodily senses, also harbors the possibility of restoring subjectivity. Since VR space is not given in a completed state but occurs through the spectator's perceptual process, the spectator becomes a subject who directly interprets and constructs the virtual space through their own senses. At this point, this study aesthetically incorporates the discussion of subjectivity in VR through the theory of Jacques Rancière, who respects the spectator as an inherently subjective being. Confronted with VR art in an indeterminate state, spectators translate invisible data into an experienceable space through their bodily senses and develop their own narratives. When spectators, on the premise of their respective equality, translate the gaps they face into their own language and expand them into a collective experience, an “emancipated community” can finally be formed within VR art.
Therefore, this study analyzes the aesthetic possibilities of VR art on two levels through specific practical cases of contemporary artists who enable the expansion of thought through the spectator's subjective senses. First, it examines VR art that elevates the status of the spectator to a co-creator, focusing on the spectator’s physical intervention and perceptual process mediated by the interface in a virtual space that exists as an open space. In the works of Jeffrey Shaw, Bill Viola, and Olafur Eliasson, the spectator is not a mere recipient of information but a subjective being who actively constructs a narrative through their senses. Sensory experience itself becomes a core aesthetic act of interpreting the work's meaning. Second, it considers VR art that expands the spectator's thought as a subject of judgment by visualizing invisible socio-political realms obscured by conventional wisdom. Maurice Benayoun, Hayoun Kwon, and Marshmallow Laser Feast use VR technology to bring invisible domains that cannot be physically experienced into the realm of the sensible. Their works function as artistic devices that drive critical thinking by challenging dominant social norms and positioning the spectator in the gap of ethical and political judgment.
In conclusion, this study reaffirms that VR does not remain a simple fictional illusion but functions as a medium of expansion that allows us to perceive and reconstruct reality anew. Based on this technology, contemporary VR art goes beyond total immersion to drive spectators as active co-creators by making them aware of their own positions and provides an artistic experience where spectators can judge for themselves by visualizing the concealed sides of the world. Through this, VR art is identified as a space of thought that reorganizes the existing “distribution of the sensible” based on the spectator's active performance and seeks the possibility of an emancipated community.
