In this paper, we propose a compensation method that corrects the phase-current distortion caused by PWM Shifting in a One-Shunt–based sensorless PMSM drive. One-Shunt current measurement is an attractive solution for compact and cost-oriented motor drive systems, as it enables phase-current acquisition using only a single shunt resistor placed in the DC-link. However, current can be measured only when specific voltage vectors are applied; thus, depending on the PWM pattern, non-measurable intervals inevitably occur. To secure measurable sampling windows, PWM Shifting is commonly applied by moving the switching edge without changing the duty ratio. Although this eliminates the blind region, shifting alters the sequence and duration of applied voltage vectors, causing changes in the actual current trajectory. As a result, the reconstructed current deviates from the ideal center-aligned value, degrading sensorless control stability and increasing harmonic distortion.
To address this issue, a simple yet effective current compensation algorithm is introduced. Instead of relying on inductance, back-EMF, or other motor parameters that vary with temperature and operating conditions, the proposed method employs an experimentally tuned gain to reconstruct the average phase current. This reduces computational burden, avoids parametersensitive modeling, and ensures stable real-time implementation. The method utilizes the vectordependent current slope and the shifting time information to correct the distorted current, allowing accurate reconstruction even when PWM edges are significantly displaced.
The proposed approach is validated through both simulation and an automotive coolant-pump test bench designed to emulate real operating conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that the compensated current waveform closely follows the expected sinusoidal profile, and total harmonic distortion (THD) is substantially reduced. Furthermore, torque ripple and speed fluctuation under sensorless control are mitigated, confirming that the proposed method enhances current reconstruction fidelity and improves dynamic performance under various load conditions.
Overall, this work shows that One-Shunt–based drives can achieve high-quality current feedback without additional sensors or complex observers. The proposed compensation technique effectively overcomes the intrinsic distortion caused by PWM Shifting and provides a practical and scalable solution for small, low-cost, and automotive-grade PMSM applications such as electric water pumps, oil pumps, and auxiliary mechatronic actuators. The results indicate that the method can serve as a foundation for future extensions toward higher-speed operation, multi-motor integration, and advanced sensorless algorithms.
