So far, more than 150 countries around the world have declared carbon neutrality, of which 140 countries, including Korea, have declared real carbon dioxide emissions to be "zero" by 2050.
Already, more than 250 international environmental agreements have been signed between various countries around the world, including the Climate Change Convention, the Biodiversity Convention, and the Convention on the Prevention of Desertification, which are the three major environmental agreements of the United Nations (UN).
Nevertheless, as serious environmental pollution continues to threaten human survival, various agendas surrounding sustainability in the economic sector are being actively discussed in major countries in cooperation at the global level to overcome the crisis. As social demands for sustainability rise, the management strategy of ESG has already become a global concern.
In particular, ESG is gaining attention recently because ESG is emerging as a key factor affecting the sustainability of companies and society beyond the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or Creating Shared Value (CSV).
ESG was developed to measure the degree of social responsibility of individual companies as a criterion for judging their non-financial performance, but unlike in the past, when only sales and profits of companies were considered investment determinants, non-financial factors were presented to examine the capabilities of investment companies from various perspectives.
ESG management-related studies, which have been conducted from the financial perspective of businessmen and investors, are gradually expanding to non-financial performance and are accepted as elements that must be included in the management strategy for sustainable development.
Contributing to society and fulfilling ethical responsibilities and roles have become essential requirements to secure consumer trust building and brand attachment, and many prior studies have demonstrated that ESG activities have a positive impact on the process of forming corporate reputation and image.
However, limitations have been steadily raised that the impact of ESG information on consumer reactions is not uniform for all situations or consumers. This is because the interpretation of the authenticity of ESG activities depends on the environmental factors the company faces and the personal factors the consumer has.
The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of ESG information provision on brand identification as well as product attitudes and corporate brand attitudes, and to investigate the moderating effect of corporate size and involvement. In particular, it was noted that existing ESG studies mainly focused on large corporations or non-financial performance, or measured consumer reactions as a single 'corporate reputation or image'.
First of all, by subdividing consumer attitudes as dependent variables into product, corporate, and relationship aspects, we tried to determine which areas of consumer product performance evaluation, corporate overall evaluation, and psychological relationship formation are influenced by non-financial factors such as ESG.
In addition, by setting corporate size and involvement as control variables, ESG activities are perceived as a "fairly given responsibility" under our socio-economic system, while for small and medium-sized enterprises, it can lead to "authentic value implementation efforts" and induce greater positive consumer evaluation.
In order to analyze these complex interaction effects and consumer attitudes in depth, the impact of ESG information, company size, and involvement on consumer attitudes, product attitudes, corporate brand attitudes, and brand identification, based on signal theory, was examined through multivariate analysis of variance.
The results showed that, first, providing ESG information was positive for all three variables: product attitude, corporate brand attitude, and brand identification, and had broad and significant main effects based on signal theory.
Therefore, it can be said that the information on ESG management activities of companies has a positive effect on various aspects of consumer attitudes based on socioeconomic responsibility and sustainable management for each field of E.S.G.
Second, the effect of ESG information provision and interaction with company size on product attitude and brand attitude was significant, but the effect on brand identification was not significant.
The impact in terms of product attitudes was greater in the SME brand group than in the large company brand group, which reflects the challenges and passion of the SME brand group when ESG information provision affects, showing a positive effect beyond the stability of the conglomerate brand group.
In terms of brand attitude, it was confirmed that the SME brand group was also larger than the large company brand group, indicating that ESG information provision has a great impact on the corporate image and reliability of the SME brand group as much as the large company brand group.
Brand identification predicted that there would be a difference in the impact on brand identification due to reasons such as organizational stability according to size, but there was no difference in the impact of the interaction on brand identification.
Third, the effect of interaction between ESG information provision and involvement was not significant in both product attitude, brand attitude, and brand identification. The reason for this is that the main effect of the two independent variables, ESG information provision and involvement, was strong, so the interaction effect was relatively weak.
As such, ESG information provision is an important factor that directly affects consumer attitudes, and there was a significant difference in interaction with company size, but there was no difference in interaction with involvement.
This study verified that if corporate ESG information is provided to consumers, consumers' overall attitude can be changed more positively, and it was confirmed that companies can improve the level of product attitude, brand attitude, and brand identification by providing active ESG activity information as well as ESG management activities.
These findings suggest that ESG activities can serve as a discriminatory signal that emphasizes the product's own competitiveness and cost-effectiveness, and these ESG activities can reduce consumer uncertainty and perceived risk as well as SME innovation.
On the brand side, SMEs' ESG management strategies need to be designed to eliminate anxiety factors of SMEs that are perceived as structural limitations rather than large-scale campaigns or event awareness-raising strategies.
It also suggests that ESG is no longer a financial or non-financial competitive advantage, but an indispensable basic condition that consumers expect to least when choosing a company or making purchase decisions.
It has been confirmed once again that providing information on ESG management activities of companies is an activity that creates value for stakeholders by overcoming not only the size of the company but also the internal and external environment.
Finally, it contributes greatly to signal theory, which was the theoretical basis of this study, in that the function of signals was expanded from short-term quality signals to long-term values and identities, the results of signals were extended to multi-layered attitude structures rather than simple information transmission tools, and the asymmetry of signal effects caused by company size were identified once again.
In the future, sophisticated empirical studies on maximizing and optimizing regulatory effects such as corporate size and involvement covered in this study, as well as follow-up studies that reveal not only differences in consumer attitudes but also precedence and causal relationships as a signal to overcome information asymmetry are needed.
