Island ecosystems possess distinct biodiversity shaped by geographic isolation and limited area, yet they are highly vulnerable once sustained browsing becomes established. On deer-impacted islands in South Korea, continuous removal of foliage, suppression of regeneration, and simplification of vegetation layers have raised concerns about long-term ecological degradation. This study sought to examine how such persistent browsing pressure alters vegetation vitality, modifies forest structure, and initiates cascading changes that extend to faunal activity. To capture how these changes unfold across ecological levels, the study examined population trends together with long-term vegetation conditions, forest structural attributes, and patterns of acoustic activity.
Precise population estimates across deer-impacted islands in South Korea revealed that herds have remained well above ecologically sustainable levels, forming the basis for the structural and functional changes observed in these systems. Population projections indicated that numbers would surpass 1,500 individuals by 2035 in the absence of intervention, and past removal efforts produced only temporary declines followed by recovery above 1,200 individuals. A stable low-density state emerged only under scenarios involving intensive, non-selective removal, requiring the elimination of roughly 64 individuals per year during 2025-2030. These results show that strong population pressure has persisted for more than a decade and has continually shaped vegetation trajectories on deer-impacted islands.
Browsing-driven vegetation decline was evident across deer-impacted islands in South Korea, where time-series satellite records showed steady reductions in vegetation indices. Annual decreases ranged from -0.489% to -0.041% in NDVI, -0.668% to -0.275% in SAVI, and -1.032% to -0.852% in TCWGDinv, reflecting both physiological stress and a progressive weakening of canopy moisture conditions. Forest area also contracted in affected regions, with losses approaching 0.37 ㏊ per year in the most heavily impacted sites. These patterns point to a gradual loss of canopy vitality and repeated failures of regeneration in areas exposed to sustained browsing pressure, indicating a shift toward increasingly stressed and structurally simplified vegetation states.
The structural consequences of prolonged herbivory were most pronounced in the lower forest strata, the height range most exposed to deer browsing, where understory vegetation had largely collapsed and gap openness exceeded that of the control island by more than threefold. With the erosion of these lower layers, habitat heterogeneity declined, and microhabitats associated with dense vegetation became scarce. The resulting simplification was reflected in avian responses. Acoustic activity on deer-impacted islands declined progressively from spring into winter, and this seasonal reduction aligned with field observations showing that understory-dependent species were seldom detected. The loss of understory vegetation appears to have reduced opportunities for foraging, movement, and communication among species that rely on dense cover.
This study empirically demonstrates a cascading disturbance mechanism in which the population growth of feral non-native deer causes direct structural damage to forests and indirect functional impacts on avian communities. Given the limited resilience of island ecosystems, the accumulation of such disturbances can shift ecosystems toward alternative stable states, from which natural recovery becomes unlikely. Effective management and restoration of non-native deer should therefore move beyond population reduction alone, adopting an integrated approach that considers population dynamics, forest structure, and avian functional diversity together. By quantitatively elucidating the mechanisms of structural and functional degradation in island forests, this study provides a scientific foundation for the management and restoration of ecosystems affected by non-native ungulates. It highlights the practical potential of long-term, multi-sensor monitoring frameworks for future conservation applications.
