In response to the digital transformation era, the Ministry of Education of Korea has emphasized the reinforcement of integrated (STEAM) education—centered on Mathematics and Informatics—and the cultivation of AI literacy through the "AI Talent Development Plan for All (AI for All)" (Ministry of Education, 2025). This policy direction aligns with the 2022 Revised Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 2022), which identifies digital literacy and foundational AI competencies as core essential literacies that all students should acquire.
Accordingly, this study developed and applied integrated teaching and learning materials for Grade 7 Mathematics and Informatics aligned with the 2022 Revised Curriculum. The study also examined changes in students’ affective characteristics—including learning interest, self-efficacy, and learning attitudes—alongside their attitudes toward the use of artificial intelligence.
The instructional program was designed based on the ADDIE model and implemented over eight sessions. Two preliminary sessions focused on foundational programming concepts using Entry, such as variables, operators, and iterative structures. The subsequent six sessions were conducted as project-based lessons centered on three Mathematics–Informatics integration themes: drawing graphs of direct and inverse proportional relationships, constructing regular polygons and generating patterns, and conducting statistical analysis based on public data. These lessons were designed to organically integrate mathematical reasoning with computational thinking. Entry and Generative AI (ChatGPT) served as primary learning tools, with ChatGPT functioning as a cognitive scaffold to support conceptual understanding and problem-solving processes.
The participants were 13 Grade 7 students from a coding club at H Middle School in Gyeonggi Province. Data analysis followed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of pre- and post-survey results with qualitative analysis of student reflection essays, ChatGPT prompt records, and teacher observations. The results indicated overall improvements in students’ learning interest and self-efficacy. Moreover, students developed a more critical stance toward ChatGPT’s responses, learning to selectively identify relevant information rather than passively accepting AI-generated outputs. Additionally, the process of implementing mathematical concepts through coding and visualizing data enhanced students’ self-directed inquiry skills and problem-solving abilities.
These findings suggest that integrated Mathematics and Informatics instruction focusing on the use of Entry and Generative AI is an effective teaching and learning model that simultaneously enhances students’ affective characteristics and AI literacy. Furthermore, this study holds significance by presenting a practical framework for effectively implementing the core values of the 2022 Revised Curriculum—namely, integrative thinking and digital literacy—within the classroom.
