In contemporary society, rapid Westernization and digitalization have transformed visual culture, pushing Korea’s traditional culture—and Buddhist symbols in particular—out of everyday life so that they are either consumed as images of the distant past or remain confined within specific faith communities. Taking the view that traditional culture is not a taxidermized relic but a cultural resource that must be continuously re-created with contemporary sensibilities, this study argues for reinterpreting Buddhist symbols not merely as doctrinal icons, but as a visual language and design resource attuned to the present. To this end, it adopts pattern design as a medium that decomposes symbolic units into repeatable modules and deploys them across fashion, textiles, everyday products, and digital interfaces, with the aim of lowering the entry barrier to Buddhism and allowing Buddhist imagery to circulate naturally in daily life. Nineteenth-century Buddhist artworks collected via Google Arts & Culture are used to extract symbolic elements, which are schematized and converted into symbols, analyzed in terms of geometric and formative structure, and then mapped onto eight pattern types that serve as frameworks for producing concrete pattern designs. Through this process, the study systematizes the cultural structure embedded in Buddhist symbolism and demonstrates its expansion into a contemporary design vocabulary, thereby laying a foundation for pattern design research that bridges tradition and modernity and explores the contemporary applicability of Buddhist symbols from the standpoint of cultural sustainability.
