This study aims to qualitatively analyze online audience discourses formed in digital environments surrounding The Boy and the Heron(2023), the most recent feature-length animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, and to examine the structures through which meaning is interpreted and negotiated. In particular, the difference between the original Japanese title, Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka, and the English title, The Boy and the Heron, is positioned as one of several points of departure for understanding variations in audience reception, without treating it as a single detemining factor. Instead, such differences are examined within the broader context of interactions among historical memory, fan culture, and platform-specific conventions across different
cultural contexts.
Methodologically, this study conducts a qualitative analysis of selected Korean-, English-, and Japanese-language online discourses collected from YouTube, Reddit, Pixiv, and Naver Blog between July 1, 2023, and September 1, 2025. To enable cross-linguistic and cross-platform comparison, audience utterances were coded according to emotional orientation, thematic categories, and decoding positions (dominant, negotiated, and oppositional). Recurring discourse patterns on each platform were then organized through a case-based analytical approach.
Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model serves as the primary analytical framework, supplemented by John Fiske’s concepts of meaning negotiation and productivity and Henry Jenkins’ theory of participatory culture, which are integrated in a continuous analytical context.
Robert Entman’s framing concept is additionally referenced in a limited manner for discussions specifically related to the film’s title. The analysis reveals that, despite engaging with the same text, Japanese-, English-,and Korean-language discourses are organized around differing emotional emphases and thematic concerns, shaped by each linguistic community’s shared historical memories, generational experiences, and pre-existing images of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. Furthermore, the platforms of YouTube, Reddit, Pixiv, and Naver Blog were found to generate distinct discourse forms and interpretive strategies due to differences in comment structures, writing conventions, and the density of fan practices and secondary creative production. Through these findings, this study demonstrates that the production, negotiation, and reproduction of meaning in digital environments occur through dynamic interactions among language, platform, and fan practices. By examining multilingual online discourses surrounding a Miyazaki film, the study seeks to connect audience reception research with discussions of participatory culture.
