매개공간 개념에 기반한 공공도서관 복합시설 계획에 관한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 공공도서관은 단순한 자료 열람 공간을 넘어, 문화·복지·체 육 등 다양한 공공 프로그램이 결합된 복합시설로 확장되고 있다. 이러한 복합화 과정에서 서로 다른 기능을 연결하고 조율하는 공 간적 장치로서 매개공간의 중요성이 증대되고 있으나, 기존 연구 에서는 매개공간을 중심으로 복합화 유형별 공간 구성과 작동 방 식을 체계적으로 분석한 연구가 충분히 이루어지지 않았다. 본 연구는 공공도서관 복합시설에서 매개공간이 수행하는 공간적 역할과 작동 방식을 규명하고, 이를 설계에 적용함으로써 계획적 가능성을 검증하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 공공도서관 복 합화의 개념과 유형, 매개공간에 관한 이론적 고찰을 바탕으로, 2020년 이후 개관한 국내 공공도서관 중 복합화 특성이 뚜렷한 사 례를 선정하여 매개공간의 위치, 형태, 연결 방식 및 동선 구조를 중심으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과를 토대로 매개공간의 작동 특성 을 수직형, 수평형, 혼합형 복합화 유형으로 분류하였다. 사례 분석 결과, 수직형 복합화에서는 로비–보이드–계단식 서가 로 이어지는 수직 매개가 층간 연속성과 시각적 통합을 강화하는 것으로 나타났으며, 수평형 복합화에서는 중정과 브릿지, 연결 복 도 등 간접적인 수평 매개가 기능 간 간섭을 완충하고 선택적 연 결을 가능하게 하는 것으로 분석되었다. 혼합형 복합화에서는 수 직·수평 매개 요소가 결합되어, 상황에 따라 연결과 분리가 조절되 는 유연한 공간 구조가 형성되는 특성이 확인되었다. 이러한 분석 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 공공도서관·복지·체육시 설이 결합된 복합시설 계획안을 제시하였다. 계획안에서는 공유로 비와 아트리움을 중심으로 한 수직 매개축과, 브릿지 및 개방형 복도를 통한 수평 매개 구조를 적용하여 혼합형 복합화 전략을 구 현하였다. 이를 통해 매개공간이 단순한 이동 공간을 넘어, 프로그 램 간 관계를 조직하고 이용자의 이동과 체류 경험을 단계적으로 형성하는 구조적 장치로 작동할 수 있음을 설계적으로 확인하였 다. 본 연구는 공공도서관 복합시설에서 매개공간을 계획의 부가 요소 가 아닌 핵심 구조로 재정의하고, 복합시설의 통합성과 운영 유연 성을 동시에 확보하기 위한 계획적 시사점을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

In recent years, public libraries have evolved from spaces primarily dedicated to book collections into complex public facilities integrating cultural, welfare, and sports programs. In this process of functional integration, mediating spaces play an increasingly important role in connecting and coordinating diverse programs. However, previous studies have rarely examined mediating spaces as a central concept, nor have they systematically analyzed their spatial configuration and operational characteristics according to different types of library complexes.
This study aims to clarify the spatial roles and operational mechanisms of mediating spaces in public library complexes and to verify their planning potential through architectural design. Based on a theoretical review of public facility integration, public library complexes, and mediating spaces, this study analyzes domestic public libraries opened after 2020 that exhibit clear characteristics of functional integration. The analysis focuses on the location, form, connection methods, and circulation structures of mediating spaces. Based on these findings, library complexes are classified into vertical, horizontal, and hybrid integration types.
The case analysis reveals that vertical complexes utilize mediating spaces such as lobbies, voids, and stepped bookstacks to strengthen vertical continuity and visual integration across floors. In horizontal complexes, courtyards, bridges, and connecting corridors function as indirect mediators that buffer functional interference and enable selective connections between programs. Hybrid complexes combine vertical and horizontal mediating elements, allowing flexible spatial relationships in which connection and separation are adjusted according to programmatic needs.
Based on these analytical results, a design proposal for a public library complex integrating library, welfare, and sports facilities is presented. The proposal applies a hybrid integration strategy through a vertical mediating axis centered on a shared lobby and atrium, along with horizontal mediating elements such as bridges and open corridors. Through this design application, the study confirms that mediating spaces can function not merely as circulation areas but as structural devices that organize programmatic relationships and shape users’ movement and spatial experience.
This study contributes to the planning of public library complexes by redefining mediating spaces as core architectural elements rather than auxiliary areas, and by providing planning implications for achieving both spatial integration and operational flexibility.
