The purpose of this study is to propose a teaching and learning approach for Korean linguistics major vocabulary based on the adjunct language instruction model, with the aim of supporting international students majoring in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language in effectively acquiring Korean linguistics vocabulary. Rather than merely selecting and organizing major-related vocabulary, this study seeks to present a pedagogical approach that actively utilizes the selected vocabulary in teaching and learning contexts for international learners.
In chapter 2, I examine the characteristics of the Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language major to establish the necessity of major vocabulary instruction, define the concept of major vocabulary, and proposes criteria for classifying vocabulary by proficiency level. In addition, selection criteria for major vocabulary are established, and a theoretical framework for a teaching model of major vocabulary instruction is presented. In chapter 3, I select one major course within the field and compile a vocabulary index based on selected textbooks. The extracted vocabulary is classified into core major vocabulary and advanced major vocabulary according to the established criteria and further organized by subtopics within Korean linguistics. In chapter 4, I propose teaching and learning plan for Korean linguistics major vocabulary by applying the adjunct language instruction model.
This study is significant in that it responds to the growing number of international undergraduate students in Korea and the accompanying challenges in major learning by proposing a teaching and learning approach for major vocabulary based on the adjunct language instruction model. In particular, rather than addressing major vocabulary in a broad and comprehensive manner, this study focuses on a single course, selects and categorizes major vocabulary by topic, and proposes corresponding pedagogical applications. Given the limited number of studies that present instructional approaches alongside major vocabulary lists, the instructional model and teaching plans proposed in this study are expected to serve as foundational resources for future research.
