This thesis examines scrambling in Persian (Farsi) and Korean, with a focus on long-distance scrambling across clause boundaries. Both languages allow flexible word order within clauses due to their head-final structure and overt case marking, yet they differ in how freely constituents can move out of embedded clauses. The study aims to identify the structural conditions that permit or restrict such movement in each language.
The analysis shows that Persian allows long-distance scrambling relatively freely from finite ke-clauses, including movement across multiple clause boundaries, as long as no structurally similar element blocks the movement path. Subjects, direct objects, and indirect objects can undergo displacement while remaining interpretable through case marking. Korean, by contrast, allows long-distance scrambling only under more limited conditions. Movement across -koclauses is possible, but it is constrained by clause type, discourse marking, and structural intervention. Nominalized clauses, topic-marked elements, and wh-expressions block extraction.
The comparative analysis demonstrates that similar surface scrambling patterns in Persian and Korean are governed by different structural constraints. These findings contribute to a clearer understanding of long-distance movement and locality in head-final languages.
