This thesis focuses on the artistic expression and commercial value of the clarinet in Chinese film music, aiming to fill the existing gap in current research where this instrument receives limited attention. Through a multidisciplinary lens encompassing musical aesthetics, cinematic narration, and cultural industry analysis, the study systematically investigates the clarinet’s creative role and dissemination mechanisms in film scoring. Drawing on classic Chinese and international film cases, it adopts methodologies such as literature review, case analysis, industrial observation, and SWOT evaluation to explore how the clarinet contributes artistically and commercially to film music.
In terms of artistic expression, the clarinet renowned for its gentle, reserved, and emotionally penetrating tone has proven particularly effective in portraying psychological states and emotional atmospheres. Through analysis of representative films such as Finding Mr. Right, Let the Bullets Fly, and The Terminal, the thesis demonstrates how clarinet melodies are uniquely capable of driving thematic motives, guiding character emotions, and aligning with visual rhythm. Its strength lies especially in expressing subtle emotional states such as solitude, nostalgia, longing, and restraint, thereby forming a bridge between visual tempo and inner emotional layers.
The study further argues that compared with mainstream instruments like piano, strings, and electronic sound sources, the clarinet’s relative marginality in film scoring contributes to its distinct competitive advantage in sonic differentiation. With a high degree of tonal recognition and melodic memorability, clarinet music can effectively construct a “sound brand” and serve as an “emotional tag” for films, offering strong potential for music IP development. In the era of streaming media that emphasizes audience memory and emotional resonance, clarinet melodies are well-suited for use in short-video BGM, OST singles, derivative audio projects, and concert adaptations, making them valuable sound assets with long-tail potential.
From an industrial perspective, the thesis conducts a SWOT analysis to evaluate the clarinet’s current position and prospects in the film scoring industry. In terms of strengths, the clarinet is highly expressive, emotionally flexible, and versatile across various film genres; weaknesses include limited public recognition, a shortage of composers familiar with wind instrumentation, and a concentration of performance resources; opportunities arise from the rapid growth of digital platforms, AI composition, virtual instrument libraries, and genre diversification; threats stem from the dominance of electronic music, compressed production timelines, and budget constraints which limit its widespread application.
Based on this evaluation, the study proposes a range of business model strategies including original soundtrack distribution, platform licensing, film concerts, thematic performances, and character-melody IP development. It also offers suggestions on educational integration, industry-policy support, and platform collaboration, aiming to establish a sustainable pathway for transforming the clarinet from an expressive musical tool into a marketable cultural asset.
This research not only offers a comprehensive analysis of the clarinet’s creative, communicative, and commercial roles in film music, but also provides theoretical and practical insights into the repositioning and value enhancement of traditional instruments in contemporary cinema. Future research could delve deeper into cross-cultural comparisons, audience emotional response studies, AI scoring systems, and expanded case types, further promoting the clarinet’s use and branding within the Chinese film music ecosystem.
