This study aims to explore the conditions and improvement measures required for digital play in kindergarten settings to move beyond temporary implementation and become sustainably embedded in everyday educational practice. To this end, the study qualitatively examines the meanings formed between teachers’ perceptions of digital play and their actual practices, as well as the realities of the support environments and institutional limitations operating during the implementation process of digital play.
Based on this purpose, the research topic was defined as “A Qualitative Exploration of the Implementation Context and Support Environment of Digital Play in Kindergartens,” and the following research questions were established: First, how do kindergarten teachers perceive digital play, and what meanings do these perceptions hold for the implementation of play? Second, what kinds of administrative support and institutional environments are experienced by teachers from principals, administrative staff, fellow teachers, and parents when implementing digital play? Third, what institutional difficulties do kindergarten teachers encounter in sustaining digital play practices, and what improvement measures can be identified?
The participants were six kindergarten teachers working in public kindergartens in Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province and Jeollanam-do who had practical experience implementing digital play. Data were collected through focus group interviews and individual in-depth interviews using semi-structured questions. The interview transcripts were analyzed through repeated readings, meaning unit extraction, open coding, axial coding, and categorization to derive key themes.
The findings revealed that teachers perceived digital play not as a central form of play but as a supplementary and supportive medium that expands children’s interests and expressive activities. These perceptions were grounded in teachers’ play beliefs and professional judgment. In addition, the implementation of digital play was influenced by multiple interrelated factors, including physical conditions such as digital devices, network stability, and spatial constraints, as well as the perceptions and support practices of principals and administrative staff, collaboration with fellow teachers, and parents’ understanding and acceptance. In particular, administrative burdens and insufficient support systems were found to limit teachers’ practices, indicating that digital play is difficult to sustain solely through individual teachers’ efforts.
These findings suggest that digital play can be stably implemented only when teachers’ perceptions and professional expertise are combined with supportive school environments and institutional conditions, rather than being treated merely as a form of technology use. By providing an in-depth analysis of teachers’ experiences, this study offers practical and institutional implications for enhancing the sustainability of digital play in kindergarten education.
