The aim of study is to compare acoustic characteristics of consonants and vowels between twenty patients with mandibular prognathism before orthognathic surgery and twenty controls. Participants produced /CVCV/ and /CVCCVC/ syllabic structures and sustained vowels (/i/, /e/, /u/, /o/, /a/). Acoustic measurements included formants, formant differences (F2-F1, F3-F2), formant sum (F1+F2+F3), vowel space area (VSA), vowel articulation index (VAI), bandwidth, intrinsic fundamental frequency (F0), Voice Onset Time (VOT), and duration.
Results revealed significantly lower F2 values in mandibular prognathism patients for /e/, /u/, /o/, and /a/ vowels. F2-F1 was reduced for /e/, /u/, and /o/, while F1+F2+F3 was significantly lower for /e/, /u/, /o/, and /a/. Notably, VSA was significantly reduced in the experimental group, indicating formant centralization and reduced articulatory movement. These acoustic changes reflect incomplete neuromuscular compensation for structural mandibular prognathism. Among the plosives, /p'/ and /t'/ showed prolonged VOT in patients with mandibular prognathism, suggesting an abnormal articulatory organ structural strategy. Duration of fricatives and liquids was significantly shorter, accompanied by lower center of gravity in fricative spectra.
These findings demonstrate that mandibular prognathism significantly affects acoustic-phonetic characteristics across multiple parameters, reflecting the complex interaction between structural constraints and speech motor control. Future research should examine post-surgical acoustic changes and listener perceptions of speech intelligibility.
