Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has emerged as a promising approach for sustainable hydrogen production; however, achieving efficient visible-light-driven photoactivity remains a critical challenge. Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is one of the most extensively studied photoanode materials owing to its excellent chemical stability and low cost, yet its wide bandgap limits light absorption primarily to the ultraviolet region, resulting in restricted solar energy utilization.
In this study, a visible-light-active heterojunction photoanode was designed by integrating MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide) with TiO₂ (titanium dioxide) on a porous stainless steel mesh (SSM) substrate. The SSM substrate provides high electrical conductivity and a three-dimensional porous architecture, which facilitates efficient charge collection and interfacial charge transfer. The MoS₂/TiO₂ heterojunction photoanode was fabricated through a combination of sputtering deposition and hydrothermal synthesis, enabling intimate interfacial contact between the two semiconductors. Structural and optical characterizations confirmed the successful formation of the heterojunction and enhanced visible-light absorption.
The PEC performance of the fabricated photoanodes was systematically evaluated using linear sweep voltammetry, chronoamperometry, applied-bias photon-to-current efficiency, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The MoS₂/TiO₂/SSM photoanode exhibited an enhanced photocurrent density of 102.21 μA cm⁻² at 0.91 VRHE, representing a noticeable improvement compared to the TiO₂/SSM photoanode. In addition, a significant enhancement in applied-bias photon-to-current efficiency and a reduced charge transfer resistance were observed, indicating improved charge separation and interfacial charge transport induced by the heterojunction structure. Hydrogen evolution measurements further confirmed the improved PEC performance of the MoS₂/TiO₂/SSM photoanode.
These results demonstrate that the synergistic combination of MoS₂ and TiO₂, together with the conductive and porous SSM substrate, is an effective strategy for enhancing visible-light-driven PEC hydrogen production. This study highlights the importance of heterojunction engineering and electrode structural design in improving PEC performance and provides valuable insight for the development of advanced photoanodes for solar-driven hydrogen evolution.
