The prognostic evaluation of feline pancreatitis relies on clinical signs and abdominal ultrasographic findings, as there is no single prognostic indicator that can be used alone. Although SAA (Serum Amyloid A) can identify the presence of an acute inflammatory response, it is insufficient as a prognostic factor, and fPL (feline Pancreatic Lipase) is also difficult to use as a standalone indicator despite its common use in prognostic evaluation. Furthermore, non-regenerative anemia typically occurs in patients with chronic underlying diseases, and improvement in the underlying disease tends to coincide with the recovery from anemia.
Pancreatitis is one of the most common inflammatory diseases in cats, yet there is a lack of research regarding the relationship between pancreatitis as an underlying disease and concurrent non-regenerative anemia. This study aimed to evaluate whether the presence of regeneration could serve as a prognostic factor not only for non-regenerative anemia but also for pancreatitis itself. In addition to regeneration, the analysis included the relationship between prognosis and markers that reflect regeneration, such as MCV and RDW.
For this purpose, 50 feline patients concurrently diagnosed with non-regenerative anemia and pancreatitis were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 32 cats (Group A) were pancreatitis patients who exhibited regeneration, while the remaining 18 cats (Group B) were pancreatitis patients who remained in a non-regenerative state.
The improvement rate, or prognosis, showed a certain level of difference between the two groups. However, it was concluded that there was no significant correlation between the presence of regeneration and the prognostic evaluation (p = 0.128 > 0.05). This lack of significance was also observed in the correlation with MCV (p = 0.177 > 0.05); however, a significant correlation with prognosis was observed in RDW (p = 0.015 < 0.05).
Therefore, based on the experimental results, it was confirmed that the appearance of regeneration or an increase in MCV is difficult to use as a standalone prognostic indicator in feline patients where pancreatitis and non-regenerative anemia occur simultaneously. However, an increase in RDW can be utilized as a prognostic indicator for the underlying pancreatitis.
