The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the biomechanical differences between the two-handed bowling technique and the one-handed power bowling technique, focusing on the energy generation and transfer characteristics of the lower and upper extremities. Six male high school bowlers from Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province participated in this study, including three bowlers using the one-handed power bowling technique and three using the two-handed technique. Whole-body motion data were collected using thirteen infrared cameras and two force plates after reflective markers were attached to the participants. Joint torque power (JTP) and joint force power (JFP) were calculated to examine energy generation and transfer during the kick step, slide step, and upper-limb phases.
The results showed that during the kick step phase, the one-handed power bowling technique exhibited a proximal-to-distal sequential coordination pattern centered on the hip joint, whereas the two-handed technique demonstrated an energy generation pattern based on simultaneous coordination among lower-limb joints, including the knee joint. During the slide step phase, both techniques emphasized inertia control and stabilization rather than propulsion; however, the one-handed power bowling technique showed a hip-dominant braking strategy with energy transfer concentrated at a specific moment, while the two-handed technique exhibited a more distributed and continuous energy pㅏrocessing pattern centered on the knee joint. In the upper-limb phase, the one-handed power bowling technique displayed localized energy redistribution and reacceleration primarily at the elbow joint, whereas the two-handed technique showed a continuous energy generation and transfer pattern centered on the shoulder joint.
These findings indicate that although both techniques aim to achieve similar bowling outcomes, they are based on different biomechanical strategies in terms of energy generation, transfer, and control. The one-handed power bowling technique relies on phase-dependent shifts in energy utilization and shows a high dependence on localized acceleration and motion control in the upper limb, whereas the two-handed technique is characterized by a continuous energy flow based on whole-body coordination. This study provides fundamental biomechanical insights into the energy transfer structures of two bowling techniques and offers practical information for understanding technical characteristics and developing technique-specific training strategies.
