Música Callada marked a turning point in Federico Mompou’s (1893-1987) artistic life, transforming him from a local Catalan composer into a voice of universal resonance. The artistic distinctiveness of this composition surely benefited Mompou’s reputation and career on the global stage. Until recently, critics referred to Mompou as an early Minimalist, yet his music goes beyond Minimalism. This is due to the fact that the core of his music is not a plain reduction but rather an exploration of the delicate balance and coexistence of conflicting elements that make up his musical universe.
This study characterizes such coexistence as “oxymoronic aspects,” which refer to the combination of seemingly opposing ideas to express greater significance. In Mompou’s music, the contrast between austerity and fullness, constraint and expressivity, sounds and quiet does not suggest a conflict, but rather a delicate equilibrium. Rather than restricting expression, he turns limited material into profound resonance, reaching emotional depth through brevity and heightened feelings through silence.
Through a close examination of Música Callada, this research investigates how opposing forces are balanced and how they represent Mompou’s musical ideology, which has a distinct character and ambiance. This paradoxical technique can be broadly separated into three distinct parts. They are (1) interplay of opposite characters from rhetoric expressions, (2) contradictions between musical materials and performance effects, and (3) coexistence of contrasting qualities. Together, they allow the music to enter psychological and emotional dimensions that are usually difficult to fully comprehend in a conventional manner. Ultimately, his art points toward a music of inwardness that awakens the inner self, revealing its truest power in stillness, where emotion and silence become one.
