This thesis focuses on Gary Owen’s Iphigenia in Splott which denounces one of the most urgent issues in twenty-first-century Britain: the devastating impact of austerity, rewriting Iphigenia at Aulis. Set in post-2008 Cardiff, the play criticizes how austerity affects the everyday life of Effie, a young working-class woman. This thesis argues that the play rewrites the concept of the tragic heroine in modern theater by showing how tragedy can emerge from the precarious lives of ordinary working-class women. Owen successfully reimagines the tragic heroine Iphigenia for the twenty-first century in the character of Effie, whom I conceptualize as the precarious tragic heroine. By analyzing Effie through this concept as a framework, I ask how the convergence of austerity, class inequalities, and people’s isolation in responsibility and welfare cuts contributes to the modern marginalized tragic women’s tragedy.
This thesis explores this character in two chapters. In Chapter 1, I develop a theoretical framework that brings together the theory of modern tragedy by Raymond Williams, the reconsideration of tragic women by Rita Felski, and the concept of precarity by Judith Butler. Alongside these views, I analyze Effie as a precarious tragic heroine. This concept is further divided into three interrelated components such as ordinariness, precarity, and heroism. Chapter 2 compares Owen’s Iphigenia in Splott with its source text, Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis, by focusing on how the notion of the precarious tragic heroine has evolved. This comparison reveals how, as in the classical myth, women bear the losses that keep the boats afloat. With this thesis, I propose an alternative way of rethinking modern tragic heroines, as well as contemporary understandings of female heroism and sacrifice.
