This study integrates clinical and preclinical information to formulate a strategy for the management of hyperlipidemia in dogs, utilizing a mix of pharmaceutical intervention and continuous dietary lipid management. Chapter 1 discusses dogs who had naturally high levels of lipids and were given fibrates (bezafibrate or fenofibrate), either with or without low-fat diets. It demonstrates that triglyceride levels declined rapidly and markedly after therapy started. Cholesterol levels moved less, while liver and kidney indices remained stable over the monitoring period. This backs up short-term tolerability. Chapter 2 presents an evaluation of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) oil enhanced with lauric acid in mice fed diets containing different inclusion levels. There were no symptoms of liver damage, kidney difficulties, or growth concerns, thus the oil is safe to use in the examined settings. Chapter 3 uses these results to help with future feeding trials of BSFL-based meals for dogs. The dogs' body weight and feces quality stayed the same, and their blood and biochemical levels stayed within normal ranges, thus the feeds were palatable and well tolerated.
This study shows that fibrate medication, when combined with a low-fat diet when needed, works well to control triglyceride levels in dogs.
