This study challenges concerns about cognitive offloading in writing education using Generative AI, and instead focuses on how writing agency and self-regulation mechanisms emerge through interaction with AI. Unlike previous studies that emphasize the effectiveness of AI, this research aims to identify how learners express agency—defined by the OECD Learning Compass 2030 as setting goals, reflecting, and acting responsibly—and regulate their actions in writing contexts involving AI. A qualitative case study was conducted with eight 4th-grade elementary students using Wrtn, a generative AI-based writing tool, in an emotion-focused poetry writing task.
Drawing on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory as a foundation, the study analyzed multiple data sources, including text revisions, in-depth interviews, and activity worksheets, through the integrated lens of Wertsch’s mediated action and Zimmerman’s self-regulated learning (SRL). The findings are as follows. First, contrary to concerns about blind acceptance of AI-generated suggestions, students displayed three distinct patterns of agency: reflective resistance (Type A, 50%) involved rejecting and creating based on authenticity; pragmatic negotiation (Type B, 25%) blended AI suggestions with personal intent for effectiveness; and exploratory adoption (Type C, 25%) used AI as a starting point to overcome expressive limitations. Second, these patterns were linked to differences in self-regulation. Each type demonstrated unique goal-setting processes—authenticity, effectiveness, and overcoming limits—which shaped their evaluation criteria (“Does this sound like me?”, “Is this useful?”, “Is this new?”) and responses to AI (reject/create, select/integrate, accept/expand). This study provides empirical evidence that elementary students are not passive recipients but active agents in writing with AI. Moreover, it highlights the potential of AI not as a source of correct answers, but as a scaffold for fostering self-awareness and authentic expression. These findings suggest a shift in writing education—from tool instruction to nurturing self-regulated writers capable of demonstrating student agency in the AI era.
