    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 12-week Hatha yoga program on basic physical fitness and lower-limb muscle function in older adult learners. Participants were female older adults aged 65 years or older who were enrolled in sports-related academic programs at a university. A total of sixteen participants were assigned to either a training group(n=8) or a control group(n=8). The training group participated in a Hatha yoga program twice per week for 12 weeks, while the control group maintained their usual daily activities.
    Basic physical fitness was assessed using the senior fitness test items of the Korean Physical Fitness Award (National Fitness 100), including handgrip strength test, 30-second chair stand test, 3m target return test, sit-and-reach test, figure-8 walk test, 2-minute step test, and 6-minute walk test. Lower extremity muscle function was evaluated using an isokinetic dynamometer to measure peak torque, relative strength, agonist–antagonist ratio, and side-to-side differences at angular velocities of 60°/sec and 180°/sec. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance to examine the effects of group and time.
    The results revealed significant group×time interaction effects in the 30-second chair stand test, sit-and-reach test (right and left), 2-minute step test, and 6-minute walk test (p<.05). These findings indicate significant improvements in lower extremity muscle endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance in the training group. In contrast, no significant interaction effects were observed in handgrip strength, agility, coordination, or isokinetic Lower extremity muscle function variables, although group main effects were identified in some isokinetic strength measures.
    In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence for the effects of Hatha yoga on basic physical fitness and isokinetic lower extremity muscle function in older adult learners who engage in both academic learning and physical activity. These findings offer foundational data for the development of exercise intervention programs that reflect the unique characteristics of older adult learners, and suggest that Hatha yoga may serve as a safe and effective exercise intervention contributing to the maintenance and improvement of functional fitness and activities of daily living performance.
