This study is a descriptive survey conducted to understand the impact of violence experience, emotional labor, and resilience on the professional quality of life of psychiatric nurses, thereby providing foundational data to improve their quality of life. The study participants were 150 psychiatric nurses who had worked for over one year in the closed wards of nine specialized psychiatric hospitals. Data collection was carried out through direct visits to the participants' hospitals for surveys from March 24, 2025, to May 3, 2025.
The results of this study are as follows:
Regarding the sub-domains of professional quality of life, compassion satisfaction showed a positive correlation with emotional labor and resilience. Burnout exhibited a negative correlation with emotional labor and resilience. Additionally, secondary traumatic stress had a negative correlation with resilience.
Factors influencing compassion satisfaction within professional quality of life was gender(β=.16, p=.007), resilience (β=.65, p<.001), with an explanatory power of 56%. Factors affecting burnout were emotional labor (β=.20, p=.006) and resilience (β=-.74, p<.001), explaining 45% of the variance. Finally, factors impacting secondary traumatic stress were emotional labor (β=.31, p<.001) and resilience (β=-.45, p<.001), with an explanatory power of 24%.
The study's findings indicate that emotional labor and resilience significantly impacted the professional quality of life for psychiatric nurses, while violence experience did not show a significant effect.
Based on these results, to improve psychiatric nurses' professional quality of life, we need organizational support and the development, implementation, and research of customized interventions and programs that consider their socio-demographic characteristics.
