Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of shoulder stabilization exercises combined with hand grip on shoulder pain, muscle strength, range of motion (ROM), and function in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome.
Methods: Twenty-two patients with shoulder impingement syndrome were randomly assigned to either the SSEG group (shoulder stabilization exercise with hand grip) or the GSE group (general shoulder stabilization exercise). Both groups participated in an exercise program three times per week for four weeks. Outcome measures included pain intensity (VAS), internal and external rotation strength of the shoulder, active shoulder ROM, and functional scores using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI).
Results: Groups were comparable at baseline. Pain and strength improved in both groups; however, SSEG showed greater pain reduction and larger gains in shoulder rotator strength (internal/external) than GSE (p<.05). Range of motion and function (DASH, SPADI) improved in both groups, with no between-group differences at post-test or in change scores (p>.05).
Conclusion: Shoulder stabilization exercises combined with hand grip may be more effective than general stabilization exercises in reducing pain and improving strength in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome. These findings suggest that incorporating hand grip activation into stabilization exercises may have clinical benefits for shoulder rehabilitation.
